Calls For Sequels

This novella left me wanting much, much more. It felt like the first act to a full novel, and I hope to see sequels at some point. I didn't realize what was happening at the end immediately, but it became apparent with one of the illustrations, and I enjoyed the beginning and middle of the book a great deal. The number of viewpoints especially made me wonder if that was really it. There were four of them in this novella, and that seemed like too many for such a short piece. However, the action was phenomenal and I became attached to all of the character that survived until the middle.

When I opened my package and saw how small this "notebook" was I laughed. It's not much bigger than my hand and the inside is blank pages, no lines to write on. And I thought it would be a spiral notebook for some reason. Still a good quality picture of Starry Night.

I bought this thinking it would be a full-sized notebook and I was getting a great deal and honestly was trying to hit my $25 mark for free shipping. It does mention the dimensions of the notebook so I guess it is my own fault for not looking hard enough. It also doesn't have lines on the pages but now I just stuck it in my purse for when I need to jot down random things, so that is useful I suppose.

Esmé Raji Codell has written a funny, hip diary filled with one-liners and unadorned thoughts that speak volumes about the raw, emotional life of a first-year teacher. Like Ally McBeal in the classroom, the miniskirted and idealistic Codell sometimes fantasizes her career is a musical. Her inner-city Chicago elementary school fades to black as the lunch lady strikes an arabesque or a struggling student performs the dance of the dying swan, all set to her interior soundtrack. (Tina Turner's "Funkier Than a Mosquita's Tweeter" echoes whenever her idea-stealing, dimwitted principal harangues her.) She's a rash, petite, white lady who roller-skates through the halls and insists that her fifth-graders call her "Madame Esmé." But it's not all fun and games: she introduces us to children who fling their desks and apologize in tears, and at one point, after reporting a disruptive student to her mother, who subsequently thrashes the young girl, she dry heaves into her classroom's trash can.

Codell's 24-year-old voice is loud and clear ("Serious gross out," she writes after the scorned principal hugs her), though, on the principle that kids say the darnedest things, she often simply repeats their comments for comic effect. She's got sass, maybe too much self-confidence at times, and though there's no deep introspection in Educating Esmé, you'll be convinced her 10-year-old charges emerge the better for knowing her. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

Portions of Codell's diary of her experiences as a first-year teacher in a Chicago inner-city elementary school were first aired on WBEZ radio, in that city, as part of its Life Stories series. Subsequently rounded out into a book, the material still comes across like it's meant to be read aloud. Codell's voice carries the enthusiasm thatAas a 24-year-old hardcore idealistAshe brought to her difficult job. Hired for a brand-new school, she tells how she let her "na?vet?" work to her own advantage. She invented ways to engage her troubled, sometimes hostile students, relying on jerry-rigged visual aids, group craft projects, role-reversing skits and the like. Villains appear as well, such as her evil principal, Mr. Turner, a "homophobic, backward idiot." YA-With the freshness, brashness, and know-it-all zeal of a first-time teacher, Madame Esm?, as she asked her students to call her, jumped in with both feet for a remarkable year with her fifth-grade class. Her journal is at times bubbling with enthusiasm or bristling with anger. Codell is by turns tough and gentle. She witnessed two of her students being beaten by their parents after she discussed their classroom behavior. She feared that one student might shoot her. These youngsters' lives were incredibly grim, yet they read and wrote, sometimes advancing as much as two grade levels. Their teacher's success did not go unnoticed: she won the Dr. Peggy Williams Award, given by the Chicago Area Reading Association for outstanding teacher in the field of language arts. Readers are privy to the author's outbursts of anger toward the children and her moments of pride, but the intimacy of a diarist's self-examination/self-revelation is absent and the writing has a self-conscious tone. Madame Esm? sometimes seems a little too cold-blooded or a little too keen on her own brilliance, but then there are moments when her generosity and love and empathy toward her students shine and make up for the arrogance. In the end, readers find a teacher who cares.

One of the best books about teaching I've ever read

One of the best books about teaching I've ever read. Through humor Esme' manages to capture a provocative look at the underbelly of a school's culture. Though not every school matches her description, there is something every one in education will recognize from their own experience. It is hard to be an Esme' in today's schools, but that is the teacher every parent should want for their children.

A real look into the first year of teaching.

To start out, this is not a textbook on how to be a teacher. It is not a psychological explanation of child behavior... it is simply the diary of a first year teacher. If you know that coming in, then be ready for one of the most eye opening books you'll read.

With all the talk about what goes on in our schools, it's real look into what it is like being "on the front lines" with the children in america.

If you have children entering school, this is an insight into what our teachers are going through (in some places). They are underfunded, overworked, and are expected to be everything to these children. As a parent, it helped me understand better all the challenges that my children's teachers deal with. I've found myself to be much more sympathetic now, and willing to offer more help.

The author is the kind of teacher that many of us had: one that cared enough to give more than just a routine class experience. Sadly, with all the constraints and demands put on them, I fear that we are going to push these people out of the profession if we don't help them soon.

That's not to say this book is all gloom and misery. In fact, the author documents very well the joys of teaching and emotions of trying to care for children that don't have the best homelife for education.

Please read this if you are a teacher, going into teaching, or have children in our public school education system.

Great First-Year Teacher

This book is a reprint of a 1999 publication with a foreword by author Katherine Paterson. Probably the most appealing aspect of this book is Codell’s honesty, not to mention the genuine excitement she brings to the page about her first year of teaching. She’s honest about her principal, a man who has a real flair for mediocrity. Threatened by her competence and verve, he’s always on her about something. When she begins to win accolades, he tries to keep her on after her first year, not because she’s a great teacher but because she’d be a feather in his cap. Codell’s also honest about her abilities and efforts. She often wonders why others are so lazy when she gives so much to her classroom. She’s also honest with her pupils, learning very early that she can’t pity them, not if she is to help them to learn. When at the end of the year her below-par students actually gain a year or two in achievement on their tests, she is somewhat vindicated for her sometimes unorthodox but lively methods of teaching. Anyone reading this book would have loved to be in her class . . . if she had remained a teacher, that is.

One almost wonders why she chose to take the job, to teach or to write a book? The very next year, having trained for such work, she becomes a school librarian. As an American one could feel cheated, in a sense. Why is it that some of the most talented and competent teachers leave the field after such a short time? In Esmé’s case it may be that she’s just too good, not too good for her students but too good for the system. Why would anyone want to work in a place where there are so many negative people including one’s boss? How lovely it would be to work for a district that honors its teachers and pays them well. In a capitalist culture where corporations value their employees by way of the purse, why does that never translate to better salaries for educators, especially the gifted ones who are working harder than anyone else and yet get paid the same as someone next door who’s only half as good and only expends a fraction of the energy of someone like Codell? It is a question worthy of extended thought and research.

The beauty of Wordsworth's poetry along with excellent critical analysis make this a great edition for students

We finally have a Norton Critical Edition of Wordsworth's shorter verse: his most important shorter poems in addition to the 1805 version of his epic autobiographical The Prelude, which is also included here. The Norton Critical Edition series is praised for its careful editing, generous selections and for its compendious contextual and critical analysis. This collection of Wordsworth's most significant poetry and prose is no exception. It contains a generous selection of both verse and prose but it is heavily weighted towards Wordsworth's earlier, more highly regarded poetry. With the inclusion of the full 1805 version of The Prelude, it duplicates a portion of the venerable Norton Critical Edition of the three different versions of that lengthy poem.

Wordsworth combined a sensitive, insightful response to nature with an adventurous spirit and free-thinking, radical politics during the revolutionary age that was the final years of the 18th century. This confluence of intellectual and spiritual energy in his early writing was almost magical and it produced some of the finest, most beautiful lyric poetry in the English language. His collaboration with Samuel Taylor Coleridge on the first edition of Lyrical Ballads in 1798 became something of a touchstone for the Romantic movement in English poetry. That collection featured one of the finest and most palpably sensual lyric poems ever written: Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey. Wordsworth declared himself "a worshipper of nature" in that paean to beauty and memory and its effect on English verse in that galvanic era of the French and American revolutions and the earliest music composed by the young Beethoven was electrifying.

Wordsworth is something of a paradox as a poet. He insisted in his prose "manifestos" that poetry should celebrate the rustic, the down-to-earth, the common and ordinary of humanity and of human affairs. Yet his writing style is reminiscent of Milton in its grandeur and in its lofty rhetoric. He lived in relative isolation in the picturesque Lake District of northwestern England whilst writing about the French Revolution and continental European politics, contemporary English society and events. As he aged he became more conservative - some claimed more rigid in his thinking - and his poetic powers appear to have waned. Nevertheless, his career lasted some 60 years and his output was vast although undeniably variable in its quality. Wordsworth's earliest, freshest poetry is his finest. In it he created some of the most beautifully spiritual verse yet written, poetry that celebrated the force and power of nature and which introduced a new attitude towards the natural world. The 18th century fascination with artifice and appreciation for the highly ordered in art, which was reflected in the poetry of the age. was overthrown and a new naturalism was born. Wordsworth used nature as if it were a mirror to highlight the spiritual aura surrounding human life in poems like Ode: Intimations of Immortality and the various versions of The Ruined Cottage and The Prelude.

This Norton Critical Edition contains excellent critical analysis from 28 different contributors, including Coleridge, Shelley and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Annotations are extensive and headnotes make informative introductions to the poems. Prose and letters place Wordsworth's verse into historical context, making this a stellar collection for undergraduate students. Wordsworth's poetry is worth savoring for its beauty and for its deep insight. This is an exemplary edition from which to read and savor one of the finest poets in the English language.

Wonderful edition for in and out of the classroom

This is a wonderful addition to the Norton Critical Editions series and a beautifully chosen selection of Wordsworth's writing. Halmi includes the entire 1805 text of The Prelude, freshly edited, and his choices of recent criticism are helpful. Use it in school? Absolutely, but also take in one's knapsack while hiking or when needing inspiration.

Who knew Wordsworth could write?

Everybody knows that Anthony Wordsworth is really good at soccer (or "football" as it's sometimes called), but who knew the guy could also write? Watch out, Maya Angelou! Duck and cover, Rod McKuen! There's a new sheriff in Poem Town.

Simply put, this is the best collection of verse I've read since Jewel's A Night Without Armor (1998). It's well (words)worth the $27.49 asking price.

Although Prichard gives excellent imitations of FDR and Winston Churchill, he usually characterizes more subtly. The Dillinger Days is history told like a story, with cleverly chosen anecdotes ideal for an entertaining audiobook. The reader's cadence and articulation add zest to a quality work. J.A.H. Roaring Thirties!

I can't comment on the veracity of Tolands account, so this review deals with the book's impact on someone reading about the 30's American Gangster era for the first time. The book is fast & furious. It has a style & pace that seems totally in sync' with the wild events & full-blooded characters involved. Dillinger & Company come alive here. The accounts were thrilling, detailed & totally enjoyable. Although the author is commendably non-judgemental, not unsurprisingly, Dillinger comes over as the Class-Act of the the mobs. Whilst he certanly had a style, I use the word "class" with some reservation! The rest were just out & out villians! I was pleased to see the lawmen get a fair share of the action. The dedication & bravery of these men is in the most part commendable & a credit to their profession. The thought of facing up to a gang, including such vicious characters as Baby Face Nelson & Homer Van Meter, armed to the teeth with automatic weapons, is chilling indeed. The bank escapes give the reader a good feel of the times. It seemed that a five minute chase from any city centre bank would find the fugitives deep inside a maze of unmade roads. An almost total lack of communication between law enforcers, plus State Line jusridiction restrictions made the already fraught pursuit of these characters difficult indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed the book & recommend it very highly. I also agree that it is a good "appetite whetter" for more books of similar genre.

Revisiting a Standard Text

When first published in 1963, Toland's The Dillinger Days seemed to be the definitive work on the public enemy era, as both a biography of John Dillinger and as a sweeping chronicle of the whole Midwest Depression crime wave, also including "Pretty Boy" Floyd, "Baby Face" Nelson, the Barker-Karpis gang, "Machine Gun" Kelly and Clyde Barrow. Indeed, Toland may even be credited with launching a revival of interest in the Barrow gang. The scattered passages on the Barrows, whose fleeting fame was largely forgotten outside Texas by 1963, was largely the inspiration for the later movie Bonnie and Clyde. Toland's main subject here was of course Dillinger and the sections on the other gangs are scantier and often erroneous. Errors also appear in the Dillinger chapters. The "second Dillinger gang" was really "Baby Face" Nelson's, which Dillinger joined after the Crown Point escape, the exact details of which will never be known with full certainty though subsequent research--by Girardin and Helmer, Joe Pinkston and others--indicates that Toland got it wrong. The "Dillinger" letter to Henry Ford was long ago proven a forgery. As a straight Dillinger biography, Toland's book is actually far less detailed and accurate than the slimmer work, nearly contemporary with his own, Dillinger: A Short and Violent Life by Robert Cromie and Joe Pinkston. Still, as a history of the Depression crime wave, it was about the best volume available in 1963. Subsequent research has turned up much new information in recent years. Other authors have corrected Toland's errors. But the fact remains that Toland's work inspired a great deal of this research. Many of us gangster buffs got our start with Toland's book, so a lot of the new information available today probably wouldn't have surfaced without it. And for all its flaws, Toland's book remains a useful starting point for anyone interested in the gangster era--the Dillinger days.

Ok but not great

John was pretty much on the money in dexcribing that this is not a book entirely about Dillinger but about the crime wave that hit the Midwest in the mid 30's and the various gangsters that were a part of it. My complaint about the book is that it read more as a travel log or calendar of events of the various gangs exploits, ie Dillinger and company went there, robbed bank, went here to hide out. It does not in any detail investigate the personal motivations of each of the gangsters or the people that helped and sympathized with them or the social situation in the country that helped spawn them. In other words, its not a very deep book. If you are looking for a timeline or an introduction to the events that made up this period in US history, its ok. If you want to understand why it occured, look elsewhere.
