Ever since his first book was published some six decades ago, Peter Drucker has been essential to everyone serious about the "management of an enterprise (and) the self-management of the individual, whether executive or professional, within an enterprise and altogether in our society of managed organizations." This distinguished 30-year Claremont University professor has continuously identified critical principles in management, economics, politics, and the world in general. And he has redirected our thinking about them through more than two dozen books, including an autobiography and a couple of works of fiction. Now, with The Essential Drucker, he has overseen the compilation of his most important fundamentals into one indispensable book.

Reaching back as far as 1954 with his treatise "Management by Objectives and Self-Control" ("Each manager, from the 'big boss' down to the production foreman or the chief clerk, needs clearly spelled-out objectives" that clarify expected contributions "to the attainment of company goals in all areas of the business"), Drucker's now-established ideas take on a surprising new relevancy when remixed equally pioneering ideas from the 1960s, '70s, '80s, and '90s. If you had to have a single book on business managment and ideas, make it this one.

Drucker has long been known as one of the premier business and management philosophers of all time. I found The Essential Drucker to be a simply amazing combination of the best of many of his previous works. If you had to only have one book on business management, this is the one to choose folks! Drucker combines common sense with near-uncanny foresight and accuracy in his predictions, and his analysis of human psychology, particularly for his coined term "knowledge workers," is incredible (I know, I AM one).

I wish my supervisors would read and follow this book, they would save a GREAT deal of headache, all sorts of trouble, and probably cut the very high turnover by at least 75%. Whether you are a laborer or top CEO or president of a corporation, everyone can learn something from Drucker. I guarantee it will be well worth your time and money. Making its precepts key to your business will definitely pay handsome dividends both short and long term.

This is an excellent book to source the wisdom of Peter Drucker. He isn't only the father of modern business philosophy, he wrote, eloquently about politics and self-development as well. This little book condenses some of his finer points in one book. He is probably one of the most quoted business consultants and writers of the past three generations and if you haven't read his work, you have no doubt read someone else books or columns that has emulated Drucker.

Grandfather of management science for today

For a long time I had been intending to read something of Drucker. He is, after all, the grandfather of management science. But I kept putting it off, for I am a busy executive and need answers to my current management problems. The old man, I thought, would have less to tell me then, say, Roberts in "The Modern Firm" (which is an excellent book) or some of my internal reports.

"The Essential Drucker" it seemed, would be the right way to do my duty to history. Here I could quickly peruse a medley of the Drucker's outdated thoughts, and move on.

Oh how wrong I was.

Drucker's writing is as fresh and relevant today as when first written. His prescient insights foreshadow many recent works. Indeed, I found the essence of Tom Collins in the first few chapters; condensed and not said in quite the same way, of course, but the principle insights were the same. Drucker has reminded me that fundamental truths are timeless.

And there is something else I especially like; the tone. Drucker writes like a commander. He has confidence - not a blaring promotional edge - but a sense of solidity and authority that comes from saying things meaningful, clear, practical, logical; things from someone with his feet firmly on the ground.

Don't miss this book if you are not sure of where to start with Drucker. It may whet your appetite for more Drucker.

This book gives the rebuilder all the critical information that is needed to perform a successful overhaul of a small block Ford engine. The text is clearly written and there are many color photos to illustrate the proceedures that have to be performed. There are also a number of spec. charts and tables that list critical dimensions and clearences. This book is valuable to both the pro and the newbie.

About the Author
Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe’s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner’s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. He died in Dornach, Switzerland.

Preface

The Fujitsu Version of COBOL: From Micro to Mainframe, Third Edition parallels our earlier work, but has been updated to support Fujitsu COBOL Version 4.0. All listings in the text have been modified for the new compiler, especially those listings pertaining to screen 1/O. We have added an extensive appendix with supporting documentation and hands-on exercises that describe how to use the new software to full advantage. The set of student programming projects has also been thoroughly revised. As in the previous edition, the Fujitsu software is provided with the text at no additional cost. (The text may also be ordered with one of two compilers from Micro Focus, Net Express COBOL or Personal COBOL, but at an additional cost.)

The Fujitsu version is supported by our Web site at prenhall/grauer. Students can download the practice files and PowerPoint lectures as before, but now have access to an online studyguide that provides an interactive review on a chapterby-chapter basis. Each chapter contains a variety of short answer questions that can be taken for self-evaluation or e-mailed to instructors.

The Fujitsu Version of COBOL: From Micro to Mainframe includes all subjects normally covered in the one-year COBOL sequence. The scope is extensive, ranging from an introduction to COBOL, to maintaining sequential files and non-sequential files, to object-oriented COBOL, to linking COBOL programs and Visual Basic.

Benefits and Features

Both the new Fujitsu version, and the earlier Micro Focus version, on which it is based, respond to the requests of students and instructors to provide access to Windows-based tools, while maintaining the proven approach to teaching COBOL. Its many features include: Appendix A provides extensive coverage of the Fujitsu compiler through a series of hands-on exercises. Students are shown how to create and edit COBOL programs, how to compile, link, and edit a program, and how to use the debugging facility. A new chapter (Chapter 19) on the Y2K problem discusses the sources of the problem, and techniques to correct it. The chapter also provides a list of Web sites to obtain further information. Another new chapter (Chapter 20) demonstrates the concepts of objectoriented COBOL. This new approach to COBOL promises to be a way for companies to maintain the value of their legacy COBOL programs, while still being able to use the benefits of object-oriented programming. Appendix B shows how Visual Basic can be used to create Windows-based user interfaces for COBOL programs. Coverage of COBOL 2002 and intrinsic functions has been added in Appendix E. The 1989 extensions to COBOL 85 allow the use of predefined functions that had been missing in COBOL. This appendix also discusses the changes anticipated in COBOL 2002. Appendix G, on student programming projects has been thoroughly revised. Many of the projects are continued from one chapter to the next, enabling students to experience system development and programming maintenance. Immediate entry into COBOL programming, beginning in Chapter I. Programming is learned by doing, and the book has students writing a complete program from the very beginning. Over 30 illustrative COBOL programs reinforce the discussion in the text and serve as both pedagogical aids and subsequent reference material. Every program is presented in a uniform and detailed format, including program narrative, record layouts, report layouts, test data, and processing specifications. A thorough discussion of structured methodology, hierarchy charts, pseudocode, and topdown testing is presented in Chapter 3 and followed throughout the text. Students learn the proper way to develop programs early on and follow the procedure throughout the text. An enhanced Web site (prenha/grauer) from where students can download the COBOL listings in the text, data files for student projects, and PowerPoint lectures. The availability of the sample listings enables students to reproduce and/or modify any of the programs without the tedium of data entry and further enhances the learning experience. The Web site also provides access to an online study guide containing review questions for every chapter. An abundance of short-answer (true-false, multiple choice and fill-in-the blank) questions, COBOL problems, and programming projects for every chapter, with answers to the oddnumbered questions provided in Appendix F. Programming tips, dispersed throughout the text, which go beyond the syntactical rules of COBOL, and suggest stylistic considerations to make programs easier to read and maintain. Extensive use of graphic aids, featuring a two-color presentation, with annotated figures to further clarify the presentation. System concept presentation at the beginning of most chapters, as COBOL instruction has come to require additional material beyond the language itself. There are detailed discussions of control breaks, data validation, techniques for table lookups and initialization, storing, the balance line algorithm for file maintenance and the organization of indexed files.

The Fujitsu Version of COBOL: From Micro to Mainframe, Third Edition is bundled with a free copy of Version 4.0 of the Fujitsu COBOL compiler and includes the associated documentation in the text. Great resource for beginning/intermediate Cobol programmers

This book is a great resource for the beginning or intermediate Cobol programmer. Very clear explanations and abundant examples aid understanding. The authors favor a "hands on" approach which encourages the reader to try out the concepts in each chapter. The example code is included on the CD (along with the input files for the exercises) which is a great timesaver.
The authors are careful about pointing out differences between Cobol-85 and Cobol-74 as they arise. While this may seem to be a minor point with the advent of the latest Cobol standard, it is helpful to those who work with older systems that are not fully Cobol-85 compliant.
The Fujitsu Cobol environment comes along with the book. The Fujitsu compiler is a big improvement over the DOS-based compiler and editor that came with the second edition. An appendix provides some step-by-step examples to help the reader get up to speed with the compiler.
The book is weighted more towards micro computers - if you are working in a mainframe environment, you will probably want to find additional references on JCL, CICS, etc.
The book may not be the best choice for someone who has no previous programming experience, but for readers who have some background in programming (in any language) and are interested in learning Cobol, this book & compiler set is the best resource I've seen for Cobol at this level. I strongly recommend it.

Want information about mainframes & cobol, it's not here.

This book is excellent for the Cobol language, but when it comes to talking about Mainframes, only in the title do you find the word Mainframe. I could have missed the import of the book, but when 'mainframe' is not even in the index, nor is MVS (Multiprogramming Virtual Storage), CICS (Customer Information Control System), TSO (Time Sharing Operation: a program that allows the typing of the Cobol program) JCL (Job Control Language, a batch like computer language used to link and compile and interface between the programmer and MVS). I welcome "Constructive" corrections to that fact. I truly find the title "Cobol: From Micro To Mainframe: Preparing for a New Millenium" to be misleading! Had there been a better description of the book contents, I would have not ordered the book directly from the publisher.

I have taught COBOL for a number of years and have always used Grauer Villar & Buss. This new edition, although commendable in adding Microfocus Cobol, lacks true Mainframe focus. A few years ago there was an accompanying small book that greatly added to the mainframe concepts - but is no longer available. However, the flow of the book, the explanations, examples and summaries have proved to be an excellent textbook for professional training, especially when accompanied with appropriate JCL and CICS textbooks. Still above all, I rate this at the top of COBOL books - but don't agree with the authors assumption that the mainframe is no longer a relevant part of COBOL programming.

About the Author
Dr. Ron Larson is a professor of mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught since 1970. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado and is considered the pioneer of using multimedia to enhance the learning of mathematics, having authored over 30 software titles since 1990. Dr. Larson conducts numerous seminars and in-service workshops for math educators around the country about using computer technology as an instructional tool and motivational aid. He is the recipient of the 2014 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTAL FUNCTIONS, the 2014 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for PRECALCULUS, the 2012 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: AN APPLIED APPROACH, and the 1996 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for INTERACTIVE CALCULUS (a complete text on CD-ROM that was the first mainstream college textbook to be offered on the Internet). For A Math Book, Pretty Good

First off, it came sooner than I expected, even with the supposedly slower free shipping I was expecting 10 days, but it turned out more like 5-7 days. That was great! Just in time for class!

As far as the book itself goes, it's the one my teacher told me to get, so I didn't really have any options. And well, math...haha, it isn't really my slice of cake, to completely misuse a cliche. But ignoring all this, it has fairly detailed, easy to understand directions on each of the concepts. The book usually gives example problems and works you through them instead of writing out the concepts, which is sometimes good, and sometimes a pain in the butt. Sometimes if I'm feeling extra daring (not very often...) I move faster than we do in class, and I'm still able to pick up concepts. And I'm an English major, not a math one, so I'm only so-so at math. That's good, right?

As for what's inside this beast, there's around 11 chapters with about 7 sections in each, and plenty of practice problems (the odd numbered problems have answers in the back, and the even ones don't, so your teacher will obviously assign the even ones :). The insides of the covers have random diagrams with official sounding titles like ''Graphs of Parent Functions,'' and ''Formulas for Geometry,'' and some random Algebra stuff like special factors and a conversion table...that's pretty handy, I suppose. I haven't used it yet, but I'm sure some might find it invaluable.

Be aware, my teacher wanted us to get some sort of online access code, and the amazon version doesn't come with it...just a warning. That was one of the reasons I'd dock it a few stars.

All in all, I'd give the book a 3.5, but there aren't any half stars, so I rounded up...Why 3.5? 1. It didn't have the online access code I needed (it didn't say it would have it, I just automatically assumed it would) 2. Sometimes the explanations aren't sufficient enough. But...It came fairly fast, and it was in good condition, and for a math book it's pretty good, actually. So 3.5, take it or leave it.

This book is the STUDY AND SOLUTIONS GUIDE by Dianna L. Zook, NOT the textbook itself!

Please don't make the same mistake I did. I wanted to purchase the fifth edition of Algebra and Trigonometry by Larson and Hostetler. This page turned up. The image looked wrong (it and the ISBN are the only correct items on the page), but the description sounded like the textbook. I failed to click on the "show more" link in the description to see that it referred to a different edition--that MIGHT have put me on the right track, but I'm not sure. If you are looking for the TEXTBOOK (which contains at the back all the answers to the odd problems, etc. that appear in THIS book) please search for the correct ISBN: Algebra and Trigonometry, 5th Edition

What this book offers beyond the textbook's answer key is SOLUTIONS -- steps for solving each odd-numbered problem in order to reach the answer. This would be helpful for a student who is struggling with homework and needs to see the steps, for example, in solving trig identities. As a math teacher I would recommend this book for that purpose. But if you want to see what the problems ARE, you need to buy the actual textbook! Note also that the "Look Inside" pages are from a hardcover edition of the textbook and not even from the fifth edition!

Note that there are no answers or solutions for the even-numbered problems.

I'm a student when it comes to the ideology of Islam. I read this because I've visited the Citizen Warrior website and found that my values and concerns are represented there. This book is especially useful for a free born "western" minded person. Read it, your eyes will be opened.

Useful, practical, no college education required

Now here is a practical guide which really delivers what it says in its long title. It's an easy read in bite-sized chunks and can be dipped into or read right through. Because it's be designed to be immediately useful without having to read it cover-to-cover, there is some repetition. As a handbook, it's written to support individuals who are discussing Islam with family members, friends or acquaintances, either face=to-face or by e-mail. Those familiar with Bill Warner's material will recognise his influence throughout the book.

The main chapter "Answers to Objections" is 90 pages long and provides up to eight possible answers to 26 objections, so you can see it has plenty of "meat".

The book has a heavy US focus, and draws on American models like Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People'.

Although I gave the book 5 stars, I was a little disappointed that, although it attacked radical Islam and Islamification of the US, it focused only on the the WAY Islam is threatening, not WHAT it's threatening. The US Constitution is mentioned only once (p 76) and the book does not make clear that the US Constitution and all its major amendments are incompatible with sharia law.

What's more, Islam is out to curtail, change or stamp out western civilization, including the democratic process, freedom of the press, freedom of expression (including artistic freedom; no political correctness), science, understanding that the natural world is not bound by human doctrine, equality of opportunity, equal rights and obligations for women as for men, government that is small, rational and fair, the individual before the group, civility, religious freedom, tolerance (but not of public intolerance), trial by jury, habeas corpus, the presumption of innocence, the rights of the child, an obligation to help the genuinely disadvantaged in society regardless of religious affiliation and, generally speaking, a live-and-let-live laissez-faire attitude. Such a list is missing and it would have rounded out the book very nicely.

Must buy book to learn SAP BusinessObjects Lumira

Getting Started with SAP Lumira by SAP's Christian Ah-Soon and Peter Snowdon is a new SAP Press Book that is 565 pages long. This time I read the electronic version of the book, and I had the book open on a laptop while I followed along with SAP Lumira Desktop (and in some cases, SAP Lumira Cloud). You can read a sample of the book here which also includes an index.

Why should you be interested in Lumira? Forbes predicts that "Companies will invest in self-service, automation, and augmentation to answer the skills shortage" and "Storytelling will be the hot new job in analytics". These are areas that Lumira represents for SAP.

Following along in the book, I learned how to set up tracing based on the BO_trace.ini file. I also learned about How to Configure the Auto-Enrichment File in Lumira, The heart of the book, in my opinion, is the visualization. I followed along with the book using the Titantic dataset, Olympics dataset, and the SAP Price data set that I downloaded from Yahoo Finance.

I should note that the book is based on an older version of Lumira as the "explore" icon is missing. That said you can still learn from the book.

What did I learn? I can only highlight a few items here.

I liked the calculated dimensions example. I also created a custom hierarchy, following along with the book:

I also hadn't paid much attention before to the Copy to clipboard feature available in the visualization gallery; this is good to know if you want to use the visualization you created in PowerPoint.
