Not bad
By Sandy Milan
I'm not truly a fan of stories where the H loses his first wife and struggles to come to terms with her death.

+++Spoilers+++
This book was really difficult because he loses her after they are expecting a baby together using a surrogate mother. The H then rejects the idea of having the baby and wants the h to have an abortion. The h refuses and leaves without taking any money. She gets a waitressing job to support herself and her ailing father. Things are very tough until the H accidentally finds her and is stunned to see that she is still pregnant. I must say I didn't like him very much at that point and although I understand he was grieving for his late wife, he still had responsibilities towards the h and his unborn child.

The story is pretty short and we do get our hea but in my opinion it all happens pretty soon after the H loses his wife (less than a year).

Ever Since Eve...and into the night
By JackieCain
I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them immensely; however, I haven't read her for quite some time. The night I began this book, Ever Since Eve, I had planned to just read enough to get sleepy and call it a night. So much for that! I read it from cover to cover that night. I found the topic interesting and the characters well-developed and varied. Ms. Browning's style of writing is clear and makes one want to see around the corner to what's next. I look forward to reading more of her books soon.

A BEAUTIFUL ROMANCE - Ever Since Eve
By HannaleeByTheSea
EVER SINCE EVE is one of the best romances I've ever read. This was a book I couldn't put down, and the characters won me over right away. I enjoyed learning about surrogate motherhood and the emotions that the mother and adoptive parents go through. The author is clearly sensitive to difficult situations and skillfully dealt with all of them, tying up the ends in a way that was anything but predictable. EVER SINCE EVE is a well-crafted story that rang true in every way. Brava, Pamela Browning! Well done.

You Are Not a Gadget: A Manifesto, by Jaron Lanier

A NATIONAL BESTSELLER

A programmer, musician, and father of virtual reality technology, Jaron Lanier was a pioneer in digital media, and among the first to predict the revolutionary changes it would bring to our commerce and culture. Now, with the Web influencing virtually every aspect of our lives, he offers this provocative critique of how digital design is shaping society, for better and for worse.

Informed by Lanier’s experience and expertise as a computer scientist, You Are Not a Gadget discusses the technical and cultural problems that have unwittingly risen from programming choices—such as the nature of user identity—that were “locked-in” at the birth of digital media and considers what a future based on current design philosophies will bring. With the proliferation of social networks, cloud-based data storage systems, and Web 2.0 designs that elevate the “wisdom” of mobs and computer algorithms over the intelligence and wisdom of individuals, his message has never been more urgent.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, January 2010: For the most part, Web 2.0--Internet technologies that encourage interactivity, customization, and participation--is hailed as an emerging Golden Age of information sharing and collaborative achievement, the strength of democratized wisdom. Jaron Lanier isn't buying it. In You Are Not a Gadget, the longtime tech guru/visionary/dreadlocked genius (and progenitor of virtual reality) argues the opposite: that unfettered--and anonymous--ability to comment results in cynical mob behavior, the shouting-down of reasoned argument, and the devaluation of individual accomplishment. Lanier traces the roots of today's Web 2.0 philosophies and architectures (e.g. he posits that Web anonymity is the result of '60s paranoia), persuasively documents their shortcomings, and provides alternate paths to "locked-in" paradigms. Though its strongly-stated opinions run against the bias of popular assumptions, You Are Not a Gadget is a manifesto, not a screed; Lanier seeks a useful, respectful dialogue about how we can shape technology to fit culture's needs, rather than the way technology currently shapes us.

A Q&A with Author Jaron Lanier

Question: As one of the first visionaries in Silicon Valley, you saw the initial promise the internet held. Two decades later, how has the internet transformed our lives for the better?

Jaron Lanier: The answer is different in different parts of the world. In the industrialized world, the rise of the Web has happily demonstrated that vast numbers of people are interested in being expressive to each other and the world at large. This is something that I and my colleagues used to boldly predict, but we were often shouted down, as the mainstream opinion during the age of television’s dominance was that people were mostly passive consumers who could not be expected to express themselves. In the developing world, the Internet, along with mobile phones, has had an even more dramatic effect, empowering vast classes of people in new ways by allowing them to coordinate with each other. That has been a very good thing for the most part, though it has also enabled militants and other bad actors.

Question: You argue the web isn’t living up to its initial promise. How has the internet transformed our lives for the worse?

Jaron Lanier: The problem is not inherent in the Internet or the Web. Deterioration only began around the turn of the century with the rise of so-called "Web 2.0" designs. These designs valued the information content of the web over individuals. It became fashionable to aggregate the expressions of people into dehumanized data. There are so many things wrong with this that it takes a whole book to summarize them. Here’s just one problem: It screws the middle class. Only the aggregator (like Google, for instance) gets rich, while the actual producers of content get poor. This is why newspapers are dying. It might sound like it is only a problem for creative people, like musicians or writers, but eventually it will be a problem for everyone. When robots can repair roads someday, will people have jobs programming those robots, or will the human programmers be so aggregated that they essentially work for free, like today’s recording musicians? Web 2.0 is a formula to kill the middle class and undo centuries of social progress.

Question: You say that we’ve devalued intellectual achievement. How?

Jaron Lanier: On one level, the Internet has become anti-intellectual because Web 2.0 collectivism has killed the individual voice. It is increasingly disheartening to write about any topic in depth these days, because people will only read what the first link from a search engine directs them to, and that will typically be the collective expression of the Wikipedia. Or, if the issue is contentious, people will congregate into partisan online bubbles in which their views are reinforced. I don’t think a collective voice can be effective for many topics, such as history--and neither can a partisan mob. Collectives have a power to distort history in a way that damages minority viewpoints and calcifies the art of interpretation. Only the quirkiness of considered individual expression can cut through the nonsense of mob--and that is the reason intellectual activity is important.

On another level, when someone does try to be expressive in a collective, Web 2.0 context, she must prioritize standing out from the crowd. To do anything else is to be invisible. Therefore, people become artificially caustic, flattering, or otherwise manipulative.

Web 2.0 adherents might respond to these objections by claiming that I have confused individual expression with intellectual achievement. This is where we find our greatest point of disagreement. I am amazed by the power of the collective to enthrall people to the point of blindness. Collectivists adore a computer operating system called LINUX, for instance, but it is really only one example of a descendant of a 1970s technology called UNIX. If it weren’t produced by a collective, there would be nothing remarkable about it at all.

Meanwhile, the truly remarkable designs that couldn’t have existed 30 years ago, like the iPhone, all come out of "closed" shops where individuals create something and polish it before it is released to the public. Collectivists confuse ideology with achievement.

Question: Why has the idea that "the content wants to be free" (and the unrelenting embrace of the concept) been such a setback? What dangers do you see this leading to?

Jaron Lanier: The original turn of phrase was "Information wants to be free." And the problem with that is that it anthropomorphizes information. Information doesn’t deserve to be free. It is an abstract tool; a useful fantasy, a nothing. It is nonexistent until and unless a person experiences it in a useful way. What we have done in the last decade is give information more rights than are given to people. If you express yourself on the internet, what you say will be copied, mashed up, anonymized, analyzed, and turned into bricks in someone else’s fortress to support an advertising scheme. However, the information, the abstraction, that represents you is protected within that fortress and is absolutely sacrosanct, the new holy of holies. You never see it and are not allowed to touch it. This is exactly the wrong set of values.

The idea that information is alive in its own right is a metaphysical claim made by people who hope to become immortal by being uploaded into a computer someday. It is part of what should be understood as a new religion. That might sound like an extreme claim, but go visit any computer science lab and you’ll find books about "the Singularity," which is the supposed future event when the blessed uploading is to take place. A weird cult in the world of technology has done damage to culture at large.

Question: In You Are Not a Gadget, you argue that idea that the collective is smarter than the individual is wrong. Why is this?

Jaron Lanier: There are some cases where a group of people can do a better job of solving certain kinds of problems than individuals. One example is setting a price in a marketplace. Another example is an election process to choose a politician. All such examples involve what can be called optimization, where the concerns of many individuals are reconciled. There are other cases that involve creativity and imagination. A crowd process generally fails in these cases. The phrase "Design by Committee" is treated as derogatory for good reason. That is why a collective of programmers can copy UNIX but cannot invent the iPhone.

In the book, I go into considerably more detail about the differences between the two types of problem solving. Creativity requires periodic, temporary "encapsulation" as opposed to the kind of constant global openness suggested by the slogan "information wants to be free." Biological cells have walls, academics employ temporary secrecy before they publish, and real authors with real voices might want to polish a text before releasing it. In all these cases, encapsulation is what allows for the possibility of testing and feedback that enables a quest for excellence. To be constantly diffused in a global mush is to embrace mundanity.

From Publishers Weekly
Computer scientist and Internet guru Lanier's fascinating and provocative full-length exploration of the Internet's problems and potential is destined to become a must-read for both critics and advocates of online-based technology and culture. Lanier is best known for creating and pioneering the use of the revolutionary computer technology that he named virtual reality. Yet in his first book, Lanier takes a step back and critiques the current digital technology, more deeply exploring the ideas from his famous 2000 Wired magazine article, One-Half of a Manifesto, which argued against more wildly optimistic views of what computers and the Internet could accomplish. His main target here is Web 2.0, the current dominant digital design concept commonly referred to as open culture. Lanier forcefully argues that Web 2.0 sites such as Wikipedia undervalue humans in favor of anonymity and crowd identity. He brilliantly shows how large Web 2.0–based information aggregators such as Amazon.com—as well as proponents of free music file sharing—have created a hive mind mentality emphasizing quantity over quality. But he concludes with a passionate and hopeful argument for a new digital humanism in which radical technologies do not deny the specialness of personhood. (Jan.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Lanier is the digital pioneer who coined the term virtual reality, but for all his computer expertise and zeal, he now says, “not so fast.” A composer, musician, and artist as well as a computer scientist, Lanier is concerned that the “digital hive is growing at the expense of individuality.” As he advocates for human concerns over digital imperatives in a book as invigorating for its excellent prose as for its striking disclosures and cogent arguments, Lanier describes the phenomenon he calls “lock in,” which leaves us stuck with flawed computer programs and skewed search engines. Moving into the social arena, Lanier dismantles such cyberfantasies as the Singularity, draws the connection between cloud computing and financial irresponsibility, ponders “gadget fetishism” and cybercrime, and, most electrifyingly, critiques online culture’s rampant reductiveness and disdain for quality and originality. Lanier is particularly incisive in his assessment of the Web’s role in eradicating paying jobs and undermining entire careers while simultaneously bombarding the now-imperiled middle class with advertising. Beware, Lanier says, of “cybernetic totalism.” Don’t be bamboozled and devalued. The Web can be a better place. Lanier’s bold and brilliant protest against cyberhype and exploitation is a tonic and necessary call for humanism. --Donna Seaman

A critical take on Web 2.0: People first
By Michael A. Duvernois
"Technology criticism," the author writes, "should not be left to the Luddites." Jaron Lanier is certainly no Luddite, but in this "manifesto" he blasts the Web 2.0 mentality, highlights long-standing technology lock-ins, and ranges far and wide in his criticisms of the Internet, computing, and the cultures surrounding the two today.

The core of his argument is that the achievements of the Web 2.0 collaborations are neither exciting, nor new. "Let's suppose that, back in the 1980s, I had said, `In a quarter century, when the digital revolution has made great progress and computer chips are millions of times faster than they are now, humanity will finally win the prize of being able to write a new encyclopedia and a new version of UNIX!' It would," he writes, "have sounded utterly pathetic." He's referring to Wikipedia and Linux, two clear successes of collaborative construction. And furthermore, the intellectual work of those thousands of people have been undervalued, in fact, they're unpaid volunteers. The middle classes have spent their hours working without paid to build wonderful constructs for the profits of major companies. Hmmm...as I write this book review, unpaid, with Amazon looking to earn money from selling more copies of this book...

Ranging further across the Web 2.0 field, Jaron notes the Facebook and Myspace pages in their prescribed formats with individuals reduced to favorite books, movies, five options for politics, and six options for relationship status. Other parts look at technology lock-in, with the example of MIDI. It was developed in the early 1980s for keyboard synthesizer control and output, and reproduces the nuances of a keyboard but not, for example, a violin. It would be hard to get support for a new, broader tool. "A thousand years from now, when a descendant of ours is traveling at relativistic speeds to explore new star systems, she will probably be annoyed by some awful beepy MIDI-driven music to alert her that the antimatter filter needs to be recalibrated."

Well, I certainly don't agree with everything Jaron has to say, even if I do fondly recall the handmade (with blink tags) web pages from before the AOL deluge (the September without end) when the masses discovered the Internet. There's a lot of crap online, but then again, there's a lot of crap everywhere. I can happily share my family photos over Facebook with people who barely are computer literate, and still be critical of the silly lock-ins of the Facebook pages. Lanier is not a Luddite though, he doesn't want us to smash the digital world, but wants to criticize it to make it better. Nothing wrong with that, whether we agree with his criticism or not.

Thought provoking and worthy of your time.
By Robert Busko
In his book You Are Not a Gadget: A Manifesto, Jaron Lanier becomes a solitary voice in the wilderness shouting as loudly as he can that all is not well with the virtual world nor with the tools that make the virtual world possible....software and computers. That this book was written by an insider from the world of the Internet should get everyone's attention.

Jaron Lanier is a household name for those who follow the world of computers and virtual reality and his book is nothing more than a manifesto warning us that there is a dark side to the Internet. Even innocuous websites such as Facebook and Google, "lords of the cloud" do not escape Lanier's expose. "Emphasizing the crowd means de-emphasizing individual humans" and that, in the end, leads to "mob" behavior. Utterly true.

As I flipped through the book, the point that resonated most loudly to me was the impact `anonymity' has had on our virtual world (and maybe the real world as well). I can remember visiting a chat room that was dedicated to "Books and Literature" in 2000 or 2001. As a librarian I was naturally drawn to a space that I thought would be filled with others like me who had a love of the written word and for good books. Did that assumption back fire? You bet! What I found was a chat area filled with virtual people who wanted to chat about anything but books and literature. If I were to post a question about what people were reading or what they thought of a given book I was torn (virtually) from limb to limb. Having served in the military I have a pretty good operational understanding of foul language, and I'm pretty good at throwing the words around when necessary. However, that this language would be used in that particular venue by people who could remain anonymous was a shock. I'm pretty certain that most of the visitors to that website hadn't read a book in years and had no problem violating the most basic rules of civility. Lanier is correct when he argues that this is not a step in the right direction. (Please forgive this personal observation)

Obviously I'm a fan of the virtual world. I post reviews online for free (which is another point Lanier makes) but the joy isn't the posting of reviews but in reading the books; real books. What Lanier has to say should be of interest to all of us.

You Are Not a Gadget is written for the ordinary reader with a minimal background in computers. Lanier floats from idea to idea not necessarily fully exploring a point, but instead simply raising an issue and then moving on. Very effective!

I predict that You Are Not a Gadget is destined to become a cultural icon in the future. We now point to books such as Silent Spring by Rachel Carson and I'm Ok, You're Ok by Dr. Thomas Harris as books that changed society and altered the future. I suspect that You Are Not a Gadget may become that type of sign post.

I highly recommend.

Peace always.

You are a fluke of the universe. Take full advantage of it.
By David Wineberg
What Jaron Lanier does is take us up 50,000 feet and allow us to view things with perspective. He says we have been overwhelmed by the unnoticed "lock-in" and simply adjust and reduce ourselves to fit the requirements of online dating, social media, forums, and the software we employ. Web 2.0 is homogenizing humanity, taking us down to the lowest common denominator instead of allowing or encouraging us to bloom in different directions. Everything we now "enjoy" seems to be backward looking - music is sampled and retro, news is criticized mercilessly, but very few are creating it any more, relationships are Tweets...

It sounds like Lanier recommends friends don't let friends communicate via Facebook - they do it on the phone or in person. But the direction we are taking instead reduces interaction, kills creativity, journalism, music, science....it's not as pretty as predicted.

These are truly valuable criticisms, and this is an important, if flawed book. Flawed because after a hundred page pounding of logic and evidence, Lanier spends the second hundred pages telling us how wonderful it is to be a scientist and play with humans and cuttlefish. I was particularly annoyed with a gratuitous couple of paragraphs devoted to swearing, which which he says might be connected to parts of the brain controlling orifices and obscenity.

Well, to my knowledge, swearing is purely cultural, not physiological. In Quebec, the worst swearing is against the Catholic Church, Translated into English "Christ Tabernacle" sounds like something WC Fields said to skirt the censors. But it's the most vile thing you can say in polite conversation in Montreal. On the other hand Motherf----r doesn't translate into French at all. And what's any of this got to do with online reductionism? Zilch - is my point. The last 100 pages is full of such diversions.

Others have pointed to other sections they disagree with, and they all seem to occur in the last half of the book. But don't let that deter you, as it distracted him. The original message is important. People create. Software does not. Software restricts. Don't leave anonymous contributions. Build a creative website of your own design. Probe deeply and uniquely - beyond Wikipedia. Reflect before you blog.

Lanier says our humanity and creativity are being put at risk by the miasma foisted on us by the incredible leveling machine of the internet. Instead of becoming exciting, the internet has become boring. Instead of creating new music, it has assassinated the entire industry. Instead of bringing people together, it lets them off the hook. That's worth exploring, and for about 100 pages, Lanier does a grand job of it.

The Back Road, by Rachel Abbott

From the author of the bestseller Only the Innocent.

In a quiet country village, secrets abound.

When a young girl, Abbie Campbell, is knocked over and left for dead on the back road of the village of Little Melham, waves of shock ripple through the small community and a chain of events, which threatens to expose long-kept secrets, is triggered.

For Ellie Saunders, the truth about that night puts both her marriage and the safety of her children in jeopardy–she has to protect her family, no matter what the cost. And Ellie isn’t the only one with something to hide. She and her sister Leo believe they have put their troubled childhood behind them, but Leo’s quest for the truth reveals a terrible secret that has lain hidden for years.

Ellie’s neighbour, former detective Tom Douglas, has escaped to Little Melham in search of a quiet life, but finds himself drawn into the web of deceit as his every instinct tells him that what happened to young Abbie was far more than a tragic accident.

In this gripping novel, the peaceful English countryside belies the horrible truths that lurk beneath the trimmed hedgerows, behind the closed doors of smart sitting rooms and within unspoken conversations.

From Booklist
Half-sisters Ellie and Leo have done a good job hiding the pain they experienced as children in a dysfunctional family, and now that they are grown up, they continue to maintain the façade. Ellie has a picture-perfect life but has recently initiated an affair. Leo is a successful life coach but can’t manage her own happiness. Added to the mix are several coupled-up friends of Ellie’s with plenty of their own dysfunctions. When a teenage girl in their sleepy British village is the victim of a hit-and-run, everyone finds themselves desperate to keep covering up various secrets. Local detective Tom Douglas arrives on the case and quickly realizes there’s more to this than a simple accident. He digs around and realizes the victim, who is in a coma, was actually abducted before she was run over, so there are two criminals he must now track down. Abbott creates a tangled web of deception, secrets, and red herrings that culminates in a shocking and satisfying, if a bit complicated, conclusion. Readers who miss Caroline Graham’s Chief Inspector Barnaby series will likely enjoy this mystery. --Rebecca Vnuk

Not for me...
By Tracy L.
There are a few problems with THE BACK ROAD. So many that it reminds me of one of those terrible movies shown on Lifetime.

My main problem of this "mystery" is that it reads far too much like a soap opera. There are too many characters and too many red herring plot points. Perhaps the main problem is the editing. This book is just far too long. Without all of the character introspection and descriptions of the way Leo's jeans hugged her slender body, this may have made for a decent story. But I found quite a bit of it boring.

Solid story telling but with a cast of many, some unsympathetic, characters.
By QueenKatieMae
After a shocking prologue and first few chapters that promise a cutting edge story, The Back Road hurtles itself into a large group of well-to-do friends with "first world problems" getting together for a dinner party. The main characters, half-sisters Ellie and Leo, grew up together in what can best be described as an Evil Stepmother environment with Ellie getting all the attention, and all the inheritance. Leo consequently left her toxic childhood behind and established herself as a Life Coach with an Internet blog. Ellie stayed behind in their childhood home, married her sweetheart, Max, had twins, and occupies her days lavishly spending using her inheritance. Both sisters, while living very different lives and lifestyles, have remained close.

Leo has hesitantly returned to their childhood home, Willow Farm, for Ellie's post-remodel housewarming party. Ellie's friends, wealthy couples with way too much money and too little interest in their own marriages, are not a likeable lot. Fiona doesn't like sex and Charles is away in London too often. Pat left his wife for Mimi, the barmaid, and no one likes Mimi. Gary is a total ass with a new Porsche who shows up at the party, his wife, Penny, in tears. Sean, the contractor who did the remodel, left his drunk of a wife at home. And Tom, a retired detective and new neighbor, seems to be the only normal attendee at the party.

The main topic at the dinner party is the recent hit and run accident of a school-age girl, Abby. Left for dead on what is called the "back road", Abby is now unconscious, on a ventilator, and unable to talk. But, as almost every person at the table was driving the back road that night, and reminiscent of an Agatha Christie novel, the reader knows that someone at the party is the culprit.

There are more side plots to this story, of course: Max has become increasingly secretive, so Ellie thinks he is sleeping with the high school PE teacher. Fiona, looking for a sex partner, is hitting up on an unnamed person at the party. Mimi steals Ellie's phone and texts an unnamed someone, then she drops a bombshell at the party. Gary is in the process of making a business deal with Sean, who has a mysterious backer. Pat disappears and won't answer his phone. And, someone is stalking the not so innocent Ellie. The biggest mystery? Why doesn't Ellie, after everything they went through together in their childhood, trust her sister enough to share her fears with her?

The story meanders as Leo, Ellie, and Tom individually try to solve the mystery of who ran over Abby. Ellie's stalker ramps up the tension, but the reader will quickly figure out the stalker's identity. Ellie grows more and more paranoid about Max's supposed extramarital affair, but the reader will not have much sympathy as it becomes apparent that she and her stalker have a history. When Leo makes interesting discoveries about the dinner guests and someone other than the original stalker begins to blackmail Ellie, the story starts to pick up.

The last part of the book is loaded with action and answers, neatly tying together all the threads of the story. The whodunit is not surprising. But the answer to the mysterious prologue, while the clues are there, is surprising. All misunderstandings are cleared up and at the end there is a possible opportunity to continue one of the storylines in another book. The Back Road, while not a pulse-pounding, mind-blowing mystery by any means, is still a good solid mystery novel. However, I really did not care about a major percentage of the rather large cast of characters. While the retired police detective, Tom, had a very minor role in this story, so minor that I actually suspected him for awhile, I was surprised to discover he was in the author's last novel. Leo was the most intelligent and compelling, and while I sometimes did want to give Ellie a good shake for being "such a silly cow", her pain and fears were palpable.

So, I give this book 3 stars because of the unsympathetic characters, but 3.5 stars for solid story telling.

not good
By Cindy Putman
After reading Only the Innocent I was excited to start The Back Road. Not only was it morbid, but the sentences were short, stiff and it felt like it was a different writer than Rachel Abbott. The first book flowed and this book was almost like See Spot Run. Run Spot.

Becoming an automated software testing expert first requires knowledge and understanding of an organizations development methodology, tools, schedules, and resources. Within this context, an overall strategy for implementing automated testing can unfold. Development of automated tests needs to be coordinated alongside other test activity and become part of the overall testing strategy. To successfully build and maintain a suite of automated tests requires the adoption of a process similar to application software development. In the world of automated tests, a framework describes those reusable components which form the basis of an automated testing program. An automated testing expert will assess the requirements of an organization, navigate the challenges posed by people and technology, and recommend, plan, implement, and maintain a process that maximizes the participation of all testers in creating automated scripts and analyzing run results. Expert automators should have broad knowledge of technical environments, hands-on experience with a variety of automated testing tools, and a technical background to ensure customization can be achieved.

The Men Who Planned the War: A Study of the Staff of the British Army on the Western Front, 1914-1918 (Routledge Studies in First World War

During the Allied victory celebrations there were few who chose to raise a glass to the staff. The high cost of casualties endured by the British army tarnished the reputation of the military planners, which has yet to recover. This book examines the work and development of the staff of the British army during the First World War and its critical role in the military leadership team. Their effectiveness was germane to the outcome of events in the front line but not enough consideration has been paid to this level of command and control, which has largely been overshadowed by the debate over generalship. This has painted an incomplete picture of the command function. Characterised as arrogant, remote and out of touch with the realities of the front line, the staff have been held responsible for the mismanagement of the war effort and profligate loss of lives in futile offensives. This book takes a different view. By using their letters and diaries it reveals fresh insights into their experience of the war. It shows that the staff made frequent visits to the front line and were no strangers to combat or hostile fire. Their work is also compared with their counterparts in the French and German armies, highlighting differences in practice and approach. In so doing, this study throws new light upon the characteristics, careers and working lives of these officers, investigating the ways in which they both embraced and resisted change. This offers evidence both for those who wish to exonerate the British command system on the basis of the learning process but also for those critical of its performance, thus advancing understanding of British military history in the First World War.

Understanding "TMJ" symptoms and treatment at last!
By Martin Silver
"Break Away" is one of the most easy to read books I have ever encountered. Dr Abeles is an outstanding clinician and an international educator. He writes in an easy to follow and folksy style. However, by the time you complete this short book, you will have a thorough understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the tempero mandibular joint and the surrounding structures as well as the many seemingly unrelated conditions which can be manifest by pathology of the joint and the muscles which it affects. Dr Abeles also clearly explains the relationship between TMJ dysfunction and headaches, obstructive sleep apnea, neck and back pain among others. He then goes on to explain the rational of his treatment approach and its success rate illustrated by examples of some of the many patients he has treated. This book is a necessary read for anyone suffering from any of the varied symptoms of TMJ pathology as well as any health professionals who are involved with treating any of the various conditions associated with TMJ dysfunction.

stop the pain
By Dr. Wilson Trivino
Author Dr. Frederick Abeles is not your ordinary dentist. He is more of a holistic health professional who wants to discover the source of your pain. Many individuals suffer unnecessarily with migraines and headaches.
In his book, Break Away he lay out a vision that others may learn from. His book mainly centers on pain that can be directed to TMJ which is an acronym for tempromanibular joint. Attempting to find solutions rather than masking it with medication. With case studies and an overall solutions strategy, this book is a good reference. In dealing with TMJ pain, Abeles has outline a H.E.A.L. formula: Help yourself, Everything is connected, Align the Jaw, and Learn.
Stop the pain and see if this might be causing it. Begin the healing process today.

Learning from games of some of the greatest chess players
By A Customer
Romanian Grandmaster Marin takes from the games of eight of the world's best chess players over a large span of time and gives a solid analysis. It explains why and what is important about these players and their games. Such books (examples of others I liked: "Understanding Chess" and "Unbeatable Chess Lessons and More Unbeatable Chess Lessons") are very helpful in getting to understand important ideas and provide them from actual play. I also liked "The Chess Kings" that covers games and analysis and tells about the history of the great players. From Grandmaster Marin you get a good dose of great instruction along with some interesting background on the greats! I would have given this book five stars if it didn't have a lot of mistakes in typos where some moves couldn't be played and the position was wrong (I doubled checked to make sure it wasn't me). When the typos are cleaned up, then five stars!

Hard to put down!!
By Marty Marion
This book is so good,I actually bought it twice! As a result, I gave a copy to a friend rather than send it back-I know he will benefit from it. Playing through the annotated lines first( with a board and pieces) and then going back through the variations(on the computer) helped me to get the most from the ideas presented.

I have started to use the ideas in many of my online games and my opponents have not realized what's going on. I f you are a positional player, this will reinforce what you know and introduce you to concepts in a different way. If you are a tactical player, you will learn positional concepts to base your attacks around.

The best work about world champions
By I. Knezovic
This chess book is one of the kind. Most people with expirience when reading a new chess book find a lot of familiar or well known subjects and themes in it. And when u buy some world champions biography book, esentially u buy a book about one person and one style of play, with lot of similary played games in it. Lets say u buy an excellent Shirov book "Fire on board". You know more or less exactly in what direction every game would lead. And you will have a lot of inspiring tactics training in it. Or u buy great Gligoric book "I Play Against Pieces", and suddenly feel like a great strategist.
But this book, this Mihail Marin one is everything of that compiled in just one book trying to tell the most important things everyone of these eight great players learned us in chess. And it succedes in it very well indeed. Its like saying: Lets get to work, we have no pages to trash here. So Marin went to work, and hit everyone of those great masters frontally, in the head. He succesfully realised what were the best strenghts of everyone, and jumped in the right chair in every chapter.
My favorite chapter nevetheless is still the last one about Korchnoi, maybe because I like the guy and his atitude, and although author titles his chapter as Victor Korchnoi-an Universal player, to me the story tells us about fighting spirit of the great man.
I think that after reading the Petrosian chapter, I wouldnt be scared sacryficing an exchange any more, and I would be playing an opposite coloured bishop endings better and in different way after reading a Karpov chapter.
There are few small mistakes I was able to detect, mostely in analysis part, but they are not of serious nature, most of those are only tipfelers. Let me ilustrate that: on page 256 is said: "Black already threatens Rh6"; it should be sad Bh6, or on page 217 63.Ke3 move is impossible, since enemy king is on d2; or the name of Ljubomir Ljubojevic is written on page 218 as Lubomir etc. Those are really small mistakes that dont influence the overall performance of this excellent book.
I can say nothing more but absolutely recommend this title to everyone.

WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE • THE EMMY AWARD–WINNING HBO MINISERIES STARRING FRANCES MCDORMAND, RICHARD JENKINS, AND BILL MURRAY

In a voice more powerful and compassionate than ever before, New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Strout binds together thirteen rich, luminous narratives into a book with the heft of a novel, through the presence of one larger-than-life, unforgettable character: Olive Kitteridge.

At the edge of the continent, Crosby, Maine, may seem like nowhere, but seen through this brilliant writer’s eyes, it’s in essence the whole world, and the lives that are lived there are filled with all of the grand human drama–desire, despair, jealousy, hope, and love.

At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance: a former student who has lost the will to live: Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse.

As the townspeople grapple with their problems, mild and dire, Olive is brought to a deeper understanding of herself and her life–sometimes painfully, but always with ruthless honesty. Olive Kitteridge offers profound insights into the human condition–its conflicts, its tragedies and joys, and the endurance it requires.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Thirteen linked tales from Strout (Abide with Me, etc.) present a heart-wrenching, penetrating portrait of ordinary coastal Mainers living lives of quiet grief intermingled with flashes of human connection. The opening Pharmacy focuses on terse, dry junior high-school teacher Olive Kitteridge and her gregarious pharmacist husband, Henry, both of whom have survived the loss of a psychologically damaged parent, and both of whom suffer painful attractions to co-workers. Their son, Christopher, takes center stage in A Little Burst, which describes his wedding in humorous, somewhat disturbing detail, and in Security, where Olive, in her 70s, visits Christopher and his family in New York. Strout's fiction showcases her ability to reveal through familiar details—the mother-of-the-groom's wedding dress, a grandmother's disapproving observations of how her grandchildren are raised—the seeds of tragedy. Themes of suicide, depression, bad communication, aging and love, run through these stories, none more vivid or touching than Incoming Tide, where Olive chats with former student Kevin Coulson as they watch waitress Patty Howe by the seashore, all three struggling with their own misgivings about life. Like this story, the collection is easy to read and impossible to forget. Its literary craft and emotional power will surprise readers unfamiliar with Strout. (Apr.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* “Hell. We’re always alone. Born alone. Die alone,” says Olive Kitteridge, redoubtable seventh-grade math teacher in Crosby, Maine. Anyone who gets in Olive’s way had better watch out, for she crashes unapologetically through life like an emotional storm trooper. She forces her husband, Henry, the town pharmacist, into tactical retreat; and she drives her beloved son, Christopher, across the country and into therapy. But appalling though Olive can be, Strout  manages to make her deeply human and even sympathetic, as are all of the characters in this “novel in stories.” Covering a period of 30-odd years, most of the stories (several of which were previously published in the New Yorker and other magazines) feature Olive as  their focus, but in some she is bit player or even a footnote while other characters take center stage to sort through their own fears and insecurities. Though loneliness and loss haunt these pages, Strout also supplies gentle humor and a nourishing dose of hope. People are sustained by the rhythms of ordinary life and the natural wonders of coastal Maine, and even Olive is sometimes caught off guard by life’s baffling beauty. Strout is also the author of the well-received Amy and Isabelle (1999) and Abide with Me (2006). --Mary Ellen Quinn

A Beautiful and Enriching Novel
By Ron Johnson
At over 1,500 reviews, I know my review won't make a difference, but I just wrote a negative review, so I felt the need to balance things out. I'll make this brief.

This is one of the most outstanding novels I've ever read. I normally don't reread books, but this one will be the exception. Stout tells small stories about small people, in a small town, but none of this is small, because Stout reveals that all of our stories--and yes this is an every person type of book, are beautiful. Stout's empathetic authorial voice is beautiful. Beautiful is a word I use over and over describing this book. Her use of language is heart bracingly beautiful to the point where sometimes I had to put the book down just to absorb the profound pathos she describes.

I promised a short review, so I will conclude by saying my life has been enriched by reading this novel.

"Olive Kitteridge" is about life everywhere. . .
By Eden
Why do people read books? as escapism from one's life? to be inspired by what one learns by reading to live a better life? Olive Kitteridge is a book about a woman who is true to herself, despite her family's past, despite her own blunt personality and despite being married to a man she is not happy with although she knows he loves her despite herself.

There are thirteen stories in which the character, Olive Kitteridge, appears. They are not all about her. But in each one, a facet of who she is is revealed. The book spans over twenty-five years so that the reader can see what happens to the awkward youth in junior school who grow up to get married, divorced and to think about life's meaning themselves. Olive is not easy on those she loves and they hardly feel the commitment and loyalty she has towards them because of the manner in which she snaps at or criticizes them. She is quick to retort and slow to apologize (only once in their marriage.) You might not like her but all of us knows someone like her. Moreover, many of us are like parts of her.

The richness and depth of this character and the sublime ways by which her truest, deepest feelings are revealed make me appreciate how complex people and life are in my own family and the town we live in. Although the stories are set in a small town in Maine, I can see people's behavior so similar to them paralleled in the working-class town I live in here in Central Massachusetts. The poignancy is striking because there seem to be no places on earth where family weaknesses and unrequited yearning do not exist side by side.

It's no wonder that this book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

The long way home
By Mind'sEye
I think this book is unusual and sophisticated in the characters and the way in which the stories are told. It is also very well written. The reason for my lukewarm response is simply that I found it something of a depressing slog. I know the old saw "life is hard and then you die," but this was a slow death indeed. Insights and bright moments of connection along the way, to be sure, but for me, extremely oppressive. Like writing about "boredom" by being incredibly boring. It works, it's true, but it's a pretty unpleasant experience.
