Martin Plot's Latin American background, his experience teaching theory to American art school students, and his firm grasp of debates in contemporary political thought are brought together in this sweeping vision of an 'aesthetico-political' theory. Plot argues that normative political theory needs to learn what he calls 'theorizing from events.' The cases in the book depict a diversity of children in diverse family settings and offer not just challenging situations, but possible solutions to those challenges.  Each case is followed by a question (or questions) that promotes critical thinking and stimulates class discussion regarding the decisions the teacher made, the consequences of using specific practices, and the ethical bases for decision-making.  The authors also stress the value of an anti-bias curriculum and its importance in creating a caring community of learners and preparing all children for the increasingly diverse world of the future.

SUPERB Tool Fills A Niche.

There are many books on the market in early childhood education with many different choices for almost any topic that you need. Every once in a while, though, a resource comes along and filles that niche that you have been waiting to fill for ages. This book does that.

For teacher educators like myself, I take great pains to give my students for reflective purposes real-life problems and situations that early childhood teachers face. Ozretich, Burt, Doescher, and Foster's book is full of them. All of the grades are covered (Preschool-Grade 3). Domains are exhibited (social domain, cognitive domain, emotional domain, etc.), and different cultural situations are presented.

Some of the better case studies are divided into several parts. First, the reader is introduced to a setting and a problem that the teacher suddenly faces. Following this introduction, the author's present several questions that help the reader to analyze situation toward a solution. The next section of the case study tells how the teacher tackled the problem resulting in varying degrees of success and failure. This particular approach stimulates much discussion among students because some of the studies (Case 19) can be a bit controversial.

At $16, this book will be well worth the trouble.

But Hirshberg, founder of Stonyfield Farm, the organic yogurt maker, dilutes the ego with eco. After all, this is a book that presents management lessons gleaned from life on a farm: in one such lesson, a herd of hungry pigs attacks a mound of damaged plastic yogurt cups, devours the contents and teaches Hirschberg nature's idea of recycling. Easy, Inspiring Read

I found this book in a university bookstore, and was later unable to find it in any Borders or Barnes & Noble. However, the author did not use academic language, so I wish it was more mainstream. I see many enjoying this easy, inspiring read. It's a good introductory book for the eco-minded -- businessmen and consumers alike.

A compelling case for sustainability in business

Hirshberg does a great job of showing how reducing a company's environmental impact can do wonders for the bottom line. As a businessman, he recognizes that telling people to buy a product because "it's the right thing to do" won't work. Instead, he focuses on producing a quality product using sustainable practices.

Unlike a lot of books written by CEO's, this one doesn't focus on just the author's company. He profiles about a dozen other companies (Terracycle, Patagonia, Timberland...) that are breaking new ground and making money with earth-friendly strategies.

One bonus feature - there are a number of coupons for products from Stonyfield and other profiles companies in the back of the book.

A uniquely critical technology for modern medicine

A well-founded research based textbook on the medical science, techniques, and varied applications of hyperbaric medical treatments ("HBO"). Written for specialists, clinicians and students.
This is a seminal textbook for understanding the medical and scientific facts of hyperbaric medicine, as well as implementing hyperbaric medical technologies to patient care. HBO has widely varied disease and condition applications with a commonality of pressure technology.
Medical Economics
In the modern world of medical economics, HBO can save Third Party Payers significant costs on patient treatments while delivering significantly improved outcomes and quality of life.
HBO is one of those medical sub-specialties that is left behind by the biases of modern medical economics and science. Modern medicine is primarily based on pharmaceutical economics. Significant research investments are powered by the manufacturing and distribution economics of successful drugs. This is a great and tremendous system, delivering research, understanding and successful treatments that unquestionably alleviate disease and conditions on a broad basis. But, this system is not perfect and is not without isolated failings.
HBOT cannot be packaged into a pill, has minimal manufacturing economies, and high ongoing service costs and high overhead, while associated with nominal patient volumes, and nominal billing rates. These economics have long held back this very promising technology (HBO) and its successful applications. Further, double blind studies are virtually impossible - patients perceive pressure changes, or lack thereof, technicians are required to implement pressurization, and oxygen delivery systems may not be able to deliver less than 100% oxygen.
Ironically, HBO can power pharmaceutical and surgical applications to higher levels of treatment success bringing cures where partial successes were the norms. (Chapters 9, 13 14, 15, 23, 24, 27, 33).
Controversially, HBO has demonstrated good clinical success on incurable diseases and conditions, including Crones Disease, stroke, CP, MS, and others. While modern medicine debates the etiologies and optimal treatment protocols, curative HBO applications can be given today. These applications (esp. Crones, and MS) can further illuminate etiologies therefore, furthering and accelerating alternative and supportive therapies.
HBOT supports diabetic wound healing, preventing amputations; enhances infectious disease therapies, saving lives and reducing hospital stays; is used for various poisonings; can provide accelerated surgical recoveries (up to 30-40% faster); and can ameliorate strokes and brain injuries by up to 40% when applied within 4 hours of injury.
Medical Physics
Simply, under pressure, oxygen dissolves in blood serum, and therefore can diffuse to poorly supported disease areas, or injuries. Further, HBO acts as an immuno-suppressant, relieving acutely injured tissues of oedema, preventing further injuries (if applied on a timely basis), as well as supporting the natural healing process.
Angiogenesis occurs within 15 - 20 minutes of HBO. It is not known if angiogenesis is initiated by the increased pressure effects, or by the oxygen dissolved in the serum. However, angiogenesis is felt to be a factor supporting accelerated healing in injuries, chronic wounds, and surgical recoveries. Further, little is known about these growth factors and their involvement with healing.
Neurological Applications
The chapters on neurological applications are some of the most significant in this text and should be required reading for all neurologists because they hold the greatest single promise to modern healthcare. These chapters are steeped with extensive (and largely ignored) animal and human research papers, extensive clinical studies with supportive SPECT scans and associated clinical outcomes.
The brain remains the final frontier of science and brain injuries are the most destructive and expensive to society (#1 killer of children and teenagers, #1 birth defect, #2 killer for adults).
We do not understand the brain's response to injury, or disease, much less detail its response to treatments and recoveries. But, we can accept the overwhelming clinical observations made by trained physicians world-wide of positive outcomes to HBO when applied to brain injuries, and cerebral palsy patients.
Hopefully, one day we will be able to manufacture a drug, or drug regimen that can replace HBO treatments for brain injuries. However, that day is probably 50 years from today. Therefore, today, we need to apply HBO to brain injuries, note the clinical outcomes, optimize the treatments, and develop ancillary supportive therapies.
Diagnostic Imaging is propelling objective clinical research for neurological applications of HBO by demonstrating underlying metabolic activity changes in brain tissues with HBO. Clinical observations significantly correlate with SPECT scan changes. (SPECT using HMPAO have become the scan of choice.) Chapter 18 written by Dr.'s Neubauer and Harch provide an excellent foundation for understanding and support for using HBO for brain injuries and CP.

Great resource

I recently started a small hyperbaric clinic, and am at the beginning of a steep learning curve relative to HBOT. This book has helped me and others I come in contact with understand treatment and treatment issues for many of the conditions that hyperbarics is currently being utilized. The chapters on specific conditions are thorough, well-annotated, and specific. This is the first place I go for information. I'm grateful this is updated periodically as the research base in growing rapidly. I highly recommend this book. Don't be deterred by the price, it's worth it.

Another Akash Karia Book to be Studied

"How Successful People Think Differently" is a fast read on how to become successful by thinking as successful people think, by setting goals, by writing goals down, by sharing them and by setting realistic daily goals. He talks about overcoming temptations and replacing negative habits. Learn about "if then" thinking. Akash Karia not only writes in an easy to understand style, but he also backs up his information with links to academic studies. This is a good book for many people who are still clinging to the fence, procrastinating and not achieving their goals. I highly recommend it. This is another demonstration by Akash that you can set goals and achieve them. Just look at how many great books he is writing at an alarming pace. Akash, you are my inspiration.

In examining the literary representation of these critical junctures, Neluka Silva draws upon key aspects of postcolonial, nationalist and feminist theory, which have influenced both the understanding of the concerned episodes and the literary productions of the authors selected. By providing an implicit comparative frame of reference, the author succeeds in suggesting ways in which certain choices reinforce or subvert established power relations in the fraught arena of nationalist politics in the four South Asian countries.

About the Author

Neluka Silva is Head, Department of English, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Leeds, UK, and holds an Advanced Diploma in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution from Uppsala University, Sweden. She has written articles for local and international journals on the issues of gender, identity, nationalism and peace in cultural production. Her previous books are Across Cultures: Issues of Identity in Contemporary British and Sri Lankan Writing (coedited); Feminists Under Fire: Exchanges Across War Zones (coedited); and The Hybrid Island: Culture Crossings and the Invention of Identity in Sri Lanka (edited).

Great story!

I love this story! The plot is good, the characters are good, and it is very well edited. I look for short stories because my life is hectic and I never know when I'll be able to get back to what I'm reading. With long books I have to try and get back into the story after however-many-days have passed. I was able to read this one in just a couple hours, and it was a very enjoyable couple of hours! I also enjoyed that although it is a romance story, it wasn't filled with a lot of lust and longing and sex scenes, which get tedious after a while. This story had just the right amount to tantalize but not drown the reader. I look forward to reading more of the author's work. The sneak-peeks I've looked at fill me with anticipation of more enjoyable stories! Keep up the good work, Ms. Scott! (I'd never heard of her or her stories until last night when browsing Amazon for something to read)

Cute Story

The first page or two seemed weird to me, but it got better thankfully. The author dives right into the story with both characters and gives you a cool, relatively believable love story in just a few pages. Few authors can flesh out characters the way Lisa Scott does in an entire book and Scott does it in less than half of that. She gives the characters personalities, heart, and makes you feel the romance. If you're looking cute quick romantic type short stories or novella type stories, choose her work. It's worth it.

Before anything else Folks I would like to invite you to visit Andrew L. HOY's website 'THE CLEAN EAT GREEN' as first suggested by the author. It makes absolutely good sense to check out what this book is offering before reading further!

Beginning with questions such as 'How do biblical diets help people live longer?', 'Were Adam and Eve created as Vegans?' or 'Why did Noah take extra animals on his Ark?' you will get an idea of the author's fresh approach at all essential bibles verses regarding Christians eating habits.

In 5 well documented chapters, the author addresses such subjects as Traditions, Gentile Dining Acts, the Genesis of Food and so on.

Eat Like Jesus is like no book I have read before in that regard and anyone from seasoned scholar to new believer will take something away from it!
The author offers readers much 'food for thought' bringing a whole new dimension to our feeding habits as he introduces readers to his interpretation of where and why Christians have strayed from the original teachings of Christ, starting with inadequate translations of related biblical texts.

Discerningly using the teachings of disciples Peter, Paul, Mark and others Andrew L. Hoy explains his understanding of returning to Kosher Christianity, from changing where and how we consume food to with whom.

A good start, but needs to go further

"Kosher Christianity" is a term Andrew Hoy uses in "Eat Like Jesus" to "describe a new future or potential reality" and refers to a "non-dispensational view of the Christian faith and approach to Bible interpretation."
Because we live by grace and not law, we often don't think about the reasons for some of the food restrictions God imposed on His people. Most of the forbidden animals for consumption would have caused illness or potential problems in the future. Even the Pharisees defined cleanliness in a way outside of God's intentions. God has a purpose for all of His commands. They keep us safe under His wing and healthy in order to serve Him. He doesn't arbitrarily give a command for a whim. He knows what is good for us and our bodies because He created us and everything we eat.

If you are interested in a Kosher lifestyle, "Eat Like Jesus" is on of several books which offers reasons and guidelines to follow in order to make decisions about your diet. This is the first book I have read on this topic, so I can't compare it to others. Other reviewers have said that Hoy's books contains big words and terminology that may be difficult to understand, and this is true. "Eat Like Jesus" does not contain a diet plan or recipes. If you are looking for them, you will have to look elsewhere.

how honest are you with yourself about your faith?

This book, as Hoy puts it, is about “returning to kosher Christianity.”

Just as one cannot simply walk into Mordor, one cannot simply determine if this book is factual and worth the read. Instead, one must immerse themselves into the topic and research the statements the author makes. If you are unfamiliar with systematic theology, then perhaps reading up on the topic would be a good first step. Are you familiar with the term dispensationalist? If not, then read up on it before reading Hoy’s argument. Hoy presents a persuasive presentation to argue for kosher eating within Christianity.

Hoy makes you consider the topic. For me, being a Messianic Jew, I already eat kosher. In such, Hoy’s argument did not challenge me in that arena insomuch as it challenged me regarding my theological beliefs. Hoy’s use of terminology in his written debate does lend one to argue unnecessarily, but if one can move past the nitty gritty of the language and verbiage, one can then challenge themselves to review Hoy’s argument for themselves.

The topic is fairly straightforward, but Hoy takes considerable time to present the argument. If one were to sum up his entire argument, it would be best served as his own definition: “‘Kosher Christianity’ refers to a non-dispensational view of the Christian faith and approach to Bible interpretation.”

Does Hoy get it right? Like everything else in life, you’ll need to read it yourself to determine the answer. Hoy uses a personable language, much like one talking to an audience in a researched debate, to connect with the audience and lean them toward his viewpoint. If you’re considering reading the book, it’s most likely because you’re intrigued by the subject. Based off that emotional consideration alone, you’re bound to connect with Hoy and agree with his challenge. In all, consider Hoy’s assertion as a closing point to this review: “to ‘EAT LIKE JESUS’ is not to deny the faith – it is to embrace it with more honesty and enthusiasm.”
