Pure coincidence or prophetic warning? This book was released on the same day of the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15th. It sent a chill down my spine. The book describes the lack of interagency cooperation within the national and international Intelligence Community, which may explain why the FBI and CIA failed to stop the Boston bombings.

This eye-opening book is intense and spellbinding. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. The author provides remarkable insights into the causes and cures for terrorism, war and peace, and cyber security that affect everyone on earth.

6/11/2013 Update: With the recent leaking details of classified U.S. surveillance programs, this book hits the bull's eye. A must read for everyone who cares about the future!

A very inspiring, interesting and helpful book to read

This book arrived at around the time of the Boston explosion, I hope that the government officers can read this great book to improve the anti-terrorist technology and work in a systematic way as described in this book.

It's organized and written in a very concise way, thus is easy to follow. There are many inspiring and great ideas inside the book. It gives us a wonderful overall picture of how our information can be used with purpose. We will have a better understanding of the security and safety when we are posting on internet.

The author shows great care to the peace of the worlds and provides practical, useful ways to tackle the current and the potential social security issues.

Great Web development book for the beginner and intermidiate user

I work as an ISP development staff member and from time to time write monitoring tools for our support team.

I wanted to start learning php in order to add some web interfaces to our tools.

I have found this book a very good book for the php/mysql beginner like me, great for the fact that it deals also with the installation part and even gives you all the php modules/commands you can use.

the interaction with mysql is also great from the begining and you start develop your skills using these 2 great tools.

one thing I would like to see is interaction with the system, with the exec commands for example.

beside that, this book is great.

In the first few pages of this book, the new user of PHP, Apache, MySQL for web development gets a fast track into getting a server up and running fast, took me about 30 minutes. The remainder of the book is an excellent reference, with step by step howtos. This book brings the difficulty of getting a webserver running down to a level that brings success.

Great Book for the Time -- Needs Revisions and Updates

I would truly love to give this book 5 stars; however, as some of the more recent commentators have indicated, it's out of date. Unfortunately, that's a show stopper when you're using the most recent version of MySQL! I was going over this book as a refresher course, since I have been generally well satisfied with Wrox's books, but the outdated syntax in the MySQL sections are real deal-killers. It's been years since I touched PHP, so I figured I could pick this up and get back into the groove of things and truly get into MySQL at the same time -- no dice on that one.

In short, this book is largely handicapped by two things:

1. It needs to be revamped for the latest version of MySQL and PHP (6 is right around the corner), and
2. The errata section on the website needs to point some of these things out.

I'm giving it four-out-of-five stars because it would have been a righteous book in 2005.

Few Laughs for the Money

Adam Roos has compiled another collection of jokes around a common theme... this time that venerable storytelling tradition among pre-teenage boys, namely, the dirty joke. While the ten-year-olds who are probably the only ones still telling these jokes will doubtless find them, as Roos claims, "hilarious," few others will. Nor will anyone find the asking price of $2.99 for this slim collection the slightest bit funny.

Most of these jokes were making the rounds when I was an elementary school student and probably even when George Washington was an elementary school student. The book contains about 80 jokes; some of them are one-liners, while others are narratives of several paragraphs. The humor is definitely R-rated, with frequent use of four-letter words and references to sex acts and sex organs. Needless to say, the humor in this book will offend a lot of people; in all fairness, however, anyone likely to be offended will probably not be reading this book.

I've read a number of Roos's joke books on Amazon (he offered many of them for free for a brief period, including this one), and the quality ranges from mildly amusing to downright disgusting. Fortunately, although this book is as crude as the title suggests, it isn't as patently offensive as some of his other books that are intentionally cruel towards various religious, ethnic, or physical types. Instead, I found the jokes to be relatively innocuous, or as innocuous as a book of sex jokes can be.

That's not to say most of the book is funny, because it isn't. Humor is quite subjective, but I found about 10-15 of the jokes in the book mildly amusing. Roos's story telling style is quite awkward at times, and he manages to butcher a few jokes with his rather convoluted narratives. Still, there's more humor here than in some of his books.

What the book does share with Roos's other books is a ridiculously overblown price tag. Roos is asking $2.99 for a meager collection of 80 jokes. In my mind, that's far too much to pay for about a dozen jokes that are even mildly funny. To make matters worse, in an effort to pad the book's length, Roos puts each joke (with its large font title) on a separate page, resulting in a number of pages containing one or two lines. Sadly, the dirtiest thing about this collection of dirty jokes is the treatment that the reader who pays full price for the book is going to receive.

About the Author
Jane Piper Clendinning is professor of music theory at the Florida State University College of Music. She has published articles reflecting her interests in the history of theory, theory and analysis of twentieth-century music, computer pitch recognition, and computer applications in music. Her current research interests include theory and analysis of popular and world musics. She has served as the chair of the Advanced Placement Music Theory Test Development Committee and as an AP reader, and is a regular consultant at AP workshops and summer Institutes.

Elizabeth West Marvin is professor of music theory and former dean of academic affairs at the Eastman School of Music. She has published in the areas of music cognition, music theory pedagogy, theory and analysis of atonal music, contour theory, history of theory, and analysis and performance. She is past president of the Society for Music Theory and is currently co-chair of the Advanced Placement Music Theory Test Development Committee. Marvin is the 2012 recipient of the Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Music Theory Teaching and Scholarship.

A workbook with no answer key

Warning: no answer key at all in the book. Not even for odds or evens or something like that. This workbook is totally useless unless you have a teacher to tell you whether your answers are right and wrong. Just page after page of worksheets, which are designed to be torn out and handed in to a teacher. Not useful for self study - and annoying for a class too, because you will be reliant on the teacher to make the book useful. If they only want to grade certain ones, it's not like you could do the rest on your own for more practice. Disappointing. I am used to seeing at least 1/2 the answers provided in my textbooks, so that I may check my work. In the main textbook, which seems to be a very decent textbook, there are some exercises, and those have answers in the back. If you are using that textbook, you may have to make do with those, or find resources elsewhere to get more practice.

Great Theory book!

Awesome book! There is a lot you can get from this. There is a code that comes with it that allows you to do reviewing on a website. Also, it has great indepth work. Although, if you are not a great reader, it may not be the easiest thing to get through. But my theory teacher loves it, and he has gone through a lot of theory books.

I Cannot Believe This Is Still "The Theory Book"!!!!

I had to purchase this book, the workbook and the anthology for my theory class when I went back to college four years ago. I have since finally graduated from Music School. I am a Prime Amazon customer so I get all sorts of recommendations via email on a regular basis. I am so totally impressed that this book is still "the theory book". I purchased my books, going thru music school and they have become an excellent reference library for my piano studio. Great Book!!!!! I wish the pages were not coming out of it in some places. That's my only complaint. This book cost enough to be put together more securely.

About the Author
Dr. Orison Swett Marden (1848-1924) was an American inspirational author who wrote about achieving success in life and founded SUCCESS magazine in 1897. He is often considered as the father of the modern-day inspirational talks and writings and his words make sense even to this day. In his books he discussed the common-sense principles and virtues that make for a well-rounded, successful life. His first book, Pushing to the Front (1894), became an instant best-seller. Marden later published fifty or more books and booklets, averaging two titles per year.

This book is the greatest book that I have ever read next to the Bible. It is in my opinion the premiere self help of all times. After reading this book your life will never be the same. Marden is able to capture the essence of life, self development and true success. If you have read other self help books you will see how many modern day writers, used much of his material to develop their thoughts and philosophy.
Although this book was written in the early 20th century, its message is truly timeless.

"The epitome of success"

Orison Swett Marden was the original editor-in-chief of the now defunct "Success" magazine. In fact, he probably rolled over in his grave when the magazine went out of publication. It was a time of mourning for me. In fact, I was just in the process of renewing my subscription when I found out..."Success" was no longer successful (how ironic).
This set of books is excellent. Most of the writing is examples of successful people from the past and present (1911). This type of motivational writing tends to get repetitive, however, there is a lot of advise tucked carefully between the many examples given. It was a very different world when the author wrote this book, but as I read it I noticed, the more things change, the more they stay the same. One difference I like is the chivalry and honesty exhibited from the time period. Even the highest standards of decency today are a far cry from that time. It was a lot of fun reading some of the examples from that era and knowing they were current events. These books are well worth the read, if you can find them.

Outstanding book, very inspirational for success-minded people

After hearing two other top folks recommend this, I decided to go ahead and buy it, and I found myself very motivated to read what Marden had to share (especially on focus, and persistence). It's a series of short chapters that have remarkable clarity and biographical examples of what many successful people did throughout history, and the perserverance and focus they had to accomplish great goals. Written in a superbly "grand" style used by authors of Marden's time, it manages to show how to capture the best of people's triumphs over adversity, and many examples of the hardships that highly successful people overcame, from Lincoln to Napoleon to many others. Fascinating, compelling, and inspiring -- well worth reading.
