Traditional indian massage technique

I have tried Ayurvedic massage (abhyanga) at the local store and loved it. Therapist placed me on traditional indian massage table (made out of beautifully crafted wood) and used sesame seed oil with traditional Indian herbs to soothe my aching muscles. I am also esthetician and I love body treatments that help detoxification and exfoliation process. I was intrigued to learn more about this technnique and for that reason, I purchased the book.

Book has very detailed explanations of how to perform this type of a massage and it also has pictures that explain hand placement and movements, which is very helpful. Some people who are more modest about the massage techniques may be off standish in adopting this technique or having this massage performed on their body. However, if one is open minded, remember that this massage technique has been used in India for thousands of years and there is certainly some merit to it providing health and relaxation benefits to the human body.

I am not sure that therapists in the West would perform all movements described in the book on all clients, because some of them may appear as overstepping client's personal boundaries. Book is very helpful about explaining the massage, the technique, sequencing and movements that help relieve particular ailments.

Not very readable, not well organized, introductory in nature

While I may not necessarily say the author is not well versed in the art and knowledge of the subject, I found the content to be not very readable. The information is not well structured and I found the content to veer off, without staying focused.

Talking about Marma points for example, how about putting their location on the body, description, a picture and what they affect all in the same place? - why does this have to be spread out in different places? I did not find the chart / graphics at the end to be very useful in pinpointing the location of the marmas.

This is a great book. It was shipped on time and packaged well. Very good book to read and understand Ayurveda concepts of body types and messages.. This helped me a lot understand my body type and how to balance it with correct oil message.

A Must-Read Autobiography of Dorothy Day, Seeker of Justice & Love!

I love Dorothy Day! I have read her diary & thought this would be about the same, but it's much more! The book could be reviewed in many ways. One could consider history of the times with dates, novels read, private thoughts, life in general or in particular, relationship to the Church, development of self, religious & spiritual development, her writing, radical, feminine, or maternal movements, love: both physical & other, her conversion to Catholicism, her leanings toward justice, unions or her development to her place in caring for others through the housing, meal, farming set-ups she became famous for. The book is dense but very interesting; I marvel at her memory! I was wondering about the title & finally came to it. Amazing insights she had, including that one. She was so aware of her thoughts, life, spirituality with its duality, love, work & especially always being pulled in two different directions. This is a beautiful, deep, readable book. Dorothy Day is highly intelligent, educated, talented, adjusted in any circumstance. Her emotions were strong: a reader can feel her pain & agony, love, joy! The history of the times is valuable for anyone to get a feel for her experiences & learn. Her spiritual journey is inspiring. Her maternal instincts were deep. I could go on about this strong, amazing, humble, holy woman. But it would take far too many pages & I would not do her or the book justice. So, my advice is: Read this great book! You will not be disappointed no matter which facet you're interested in.

A real window into her heart

This is her autobiography -- she is an amazing soul,
beautiful in outlook, couragous in deed -- always
pushing the "limits" to work for the betterment of the human
situation. What a neat lady!
The other amazing thing I found is that her life takes us
through a time in the history of the US when Worker movements were
just being started. We see some days of WWI, the Depression, WWII,
and beyond. She combined her passion to help the 99% and the
completely down & out, with compassion and lodging and food --
real works of mercy. The many different personalities she met during
her life come to life in only a few words -- she's a gifted writer, which
makes the book read quickly. This is her story, the beginnings of the
Catholic Worker movement, and a time in history that has a lot in common
with our own.

This is a very good book, so it's a shame they did such ...

This is a very good book, so it's a shame they did such a poor job with the electronic formatting. It is full of typographical errors. Some are just amusing, such as the page on which the number "1" is substituted for the personal pronoun "I." Others are annoying - the sloppiness or poor kerning that turns too many "RN" letter combinations into the letter, "M." And I have yet to figure out what "malting" is supposed to be. It is an adjective that occurs several times, but I think it is supposed to be something else.

So maybe you should get a hard copy of this book. It is a very worthwhile read. Dorothy Day was an American icon, a home-grown saint,who was so impressed by how well people pulled together in community after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake that it formed a basis for how she thought life should be lived. She's an inspiration and this book should be better known.

DSP book review

This book is mostly composed of formulas and math. It gives little background information on the reasons/motivations for the formulas. I would not recommend this if you are new to digital signal processing.

Great Companion

This text was recommended as a companion to Oppenheim's "Discrete Time Signal Processing" for a senior DSP filtering course. If your school is like mine, you sit in three hours of lecture a week, nodding and agreeing and feeling like DSP is straightforward and intuitive. Then you sit down to do your homework and wonder, "where did this come from?" Schaum's helps to bridge this gap with compartmentalized topics and numerous examples. The sections help you quickly ascertain how the notation translates and how thoroughly the topic is covered relative to the coursework. The examples help because, let's face it, it helps to see certain types of problems worked through from start to finish. There are many, many examples within the sections and at the end of the sections, worked through in minute detail. If you're into or studying DSP as a senior engineering student, if you're not the top dog in your class but still want to do well, if you learn from examples and from working through many problems that you're able to confirm, then this book is for you. If you're looking for a "solutions manual" type of book, if you want a "cliff notes" type companion, or if you don't understand lecture concepts at all, then this book won't help you much. It's not an introductory text, although it covers introductory concepts, in my opinion there's not enough background on the rudimentary DSP topics to truly qualify as introductory.

Good as a refresher or supplemental text in DSP

This outline could never stand alone as a DSP tutorial, but it is excellent if you need extra problems to solve or if you need a refresher course in elementary DSP topics. Chapter one starts where any DSP course usually starts - with a quick review of signals and systems. Chapter two is on Fourier analysis and discusses all of the basics including the concept of filtering, interconnection of systems, and finally the discrete time Fourier transform and its properties. Chapter 3 is on sampling, and includes a good discussion of analog to digital conversion and how it can induce aliasing. Next the converse, digital to analog conversion, is discussed as well as discrete time processing of continuous signals and finally sample rate conversion. Chapter 3 is especially useful, since most DSP texts do not go into as much detail on practical A/D and D/A conversion topics as this chapter does. Chapter four finally gets into the z-transform - its definition, its properties, and its inverse. Chapter 5 is about the transform analysis of systems and specifically how the z transform makes the analysis of such systems much simpler than what was done in earlier chapters. Chapter six discusses the discrete Fourier transform, which is a finite-series version of the DTFT, which was discussed in chapter two. Because the Discrete Fourier Transform has a time complexity of NxN, the next chapter discusses its more practical alternative the Fast Fourier Transform, which has an NlogN time complexity. This might seem trivial at first, but if you are filtering 1Kx1K pixel images, the difference becomes significant. Although this chapter is very brief, it does a pretty good job of driving home the main points of the algorithm. Also, it has some pretty good exercises on the FFT, which are usually hard to find in textbooks. Now that all of the groundwork has been laid, chapter eight discusses the implementation of discrete time systems, which is the essence of DSP. Common filter structures are introduced. Chapter 9, the final chapter, is on filter design. Both IIR and FIR filter techniques are introduced. Thus, if you are in an advanced DSP course, this outline will probably be too elementary for you. For first semester students, this should be a very helpful outline for transitioning from the study of linear systems to DSP.

In this third volume of a planned five-volume series, David Roy provides a complete and annotated translation of the famous Chin P'ing Mei, an anonymous sixteenth-century Chinese novel that focuses on the domestic life of His-men Ch'ing, a corrupt, upwardly mobile merchant who maintains a harem of six wives and concubines. This work, known primarily for its erotic realism, is also a landmark in the development of narrative art--not only from a specifically Chinese perspective but also in a world-historical context.

Written during the second half of the sixteenth century and first published in 1618, The Plum in the Golden Vase is noted for its surprisingly modern technique. With the possible exception of The Tale of Genji (ca. 1010) and Don Quixote (1605, 1615), there is no earlier work of prose fiction of equal sophistication in world literature. Although its importance in the history of Chinese narrative has long been recognized, the technical virtuosity of the author, which is more reminiscent of the Dickens of Bleak House, the Joyce of Ulysses, or the Nabokov of Lolita than anything in earlier Chinese fiction, has not yet received adequate recognition. This is partly because all of the existing European translations are either abridged or based on an inferior recension of the text. This translation and its annotation aim to faithfully represent and elucidate all the rhetorical features of the original in its most authentic form and thereby enable the Western reader to appreciate this Chinese masterpiece at its true worth.

Replete with convincing portrayals of the darker side of human nature, it should appeal to anyone interested in a compelling story, compellingly told.

Much delighted

Received my copy of Volume 3 of the late David Roy's "The Plum in the Golden Vase" when returning home from office and just couldn't put it down until 3.00am. I am sure, like others who have the interest in this novel, would regret the untimely passing away of David Roy before he could complete his translation. I wonder if PRINCETON UNIVERSITY will fund another scholar to take up where DR has left off.

amazing discovery

I've just read the first four volumes of the Plum in the Golden Vase back to back & I can't wait for the publication of the fifth. I have no Chinese, so I have no idea whether the translation is accurate, but I can tell you the translator has a fantastic ear for language. The combination of high poetry and guttural vernacular here is irresistible. Definitely a major personal discovery.

An entry worthy of immortality, ignored by Western Critics

We have lingered too long on the so-called, and now closed, canon of Western literature. Reading this one gets, curiously, reminded of Joyce and the Dos Passos of USA, with the bewildering set of references. This is brlliant; a must read that puts many of our western classics in the shade.
