Ecological Intelligence: The Hidden Impacts of What We Buy, by Daniel Goleman

The bestselling author of Emotional Intelligence and Primal Leadership now brings us Ecological Intelligence—revealing the hidden environmental consequences of what we make and buy, and how with that knowledge we can drive the essential changes we all must make to save our planet and ourselves.

We buy “herbal” shampoos that contain industrial chemicals that can threaten our health or contaminate the environment. We dive down to see coral reefs, not realizing that an ingredient in our sunscreen feeds a virus that kills the reef. We wear organic cotton t-shirts, but don’t know that its dyes may put factory workers at risk for leukemia. In Ecological Intelligence, Daniel Goleman reveals why so many of the products that are labeled green are a “mirage,” and illuminates our wild inconsistencies in response to the ecological crisis.

Drawing on cutting-edge research, Goleman explains why we as shoppers are in the dark over the hidden impacts of the goods and services we make and consume, victims of a blackout of information about the detrimental effects of producing, shipping, packaging, distributing, and discarding the goods we buy.

But the balance of power is about to shift from seller to buyer, as a new generation of technologies informs us of the ecological facts about products at the point of purchase. This “radical transparency” will enable consumers to make smarter purchasing decisions, and will drive companies to rethink and reform their businesses, ushering in, Goleman claims, a new age of competitive advantage.

From Publishers Weekly
Two years ago, British fashion designer Anna Hindmarch produced the must-have accessory of the season: a bleached, organic cotton tote manufactured in fair-wage factories, subsidized with carbon offsets and emblazoned with the slogan, I'm NOT a plastic bag. But according to Goleman (Emotional Intelligence), the people who bought the bag were advertising their ecological ignorance, not their consciousness. In this thorough examination of the inconsistencies and delusions at the core of the going green effort, the author argues that consumers are collective victims of a sleight of hand, helplessly unaware of the true provenance and impact of the products they purchase: they reassure themselves by buying environmentally friendly tote bags that, upon ecological assessment, reveal some uncomfortable facts, e.g., 10,000 liters of water were required to grow the cotton for one bag, and cotton crops alone account for the use of about 10% of the world's pesticides. Goleman's critiques are scathing, but his conclusion is heartening: a new generation of industrial ecologists is mapping the exact impact of every production process, which could challenge consumers to change their behavior in substance rather than just show. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Goleman, best-selling author of such groundbreaking works as Emotional Intelligence (1995) and Primal Leadership (2002), brings his invaluable behavioral insights to our most urgent dilemma: how to halt environmental catastrophe. What’s required, Goleman believes, is ecological intelligence, which he defines as understanding the “hidden web of connections between human activity and nature’s systems, and the subtle complexities of their intersections.” More concretely, Goleman encourages readers to learn about the many invisible threats to our health and the health of the environment caused by product manufacturing. Wisely focusing on the one element we can control, what we purchase, Goleman calls for higher “green” standards and “radical transparency” regarding how products are made. An enlightening foray into industrial ecology reveals how new forms of analysis determine precisely how the manufacture of such disparate items as toys, shampoo, and paper contributes to natural resource depletion, chemical pollution, and global warming. Brimming with intriguing, useful, and galvanizing information, this is an exceptionally sharp, innovative, and realistic approach to raising the demand for environmentally safe merchandise. Given Goleman’s track record and the pressing need for smart strategies, this fascinating treatise has tremendous potential for reaching and motivating a large and diverse audience. --Donna Seaman

Review
“Goleman's critiques are scathing, but his conclusion is heartening: a new generation of industrial ecologists is mapping the exact impact of every production process, which could challenge consumers to change their behavior in substance rather than just show.”

-- Publishers Weekly

“A convincing case that information alone–provided that it’s easy for shoppers to access–can spur an ecological revolution.”

-- Kirkus Reviews

“Former New York Times columnist Goleman (Emotional Intelligence)… persuasively argues that radical transparency–which includes environmental, social, biological, and worker safety and health impacts–will better enable consumers to make decisions based on what matters most to them. Goleman's discussion of individual shopping habits is particularly interesting, including the need to be aware of superficial service and product claims…Although individual decisions are important, he asserts that group action and institutions can create market pressure to shift to sustainable practices and that digital tools can play an effective role in shaping collective awareness and creating coordinated action. Recommended for readers interested in business or environmental issues.”

-- Library Journal

"Ecological Intelligence is a fascinating whodunit revealing the intricate processes that create our material world. Written by the acknowledged master on how to be a truly intelligent human being, Goleman reveals the complex web of impacts everyday products have upon people and habitat and how a new form of intelligence can radically alter consumption patterns from destructive to constructive."

-- Paul Hawken, Author of the Ecology of Commerce and Blessed Unrest

“The eight hundred pound gorilla behind virtually all of the ‘sustainability challenges’ is you, and me, the consumer.  The problem is not that we are bad but that we have been blind to the impacts of our every-day choices - which is about to change. As Goleman shows, new information technologies and growing public concern are awakening our intrinsic desire to do what is right to shape a healthier world for our children and grandchildren.”

-- Peter Senge, Director of the Center for Organizational Learning at the MIT Sloan School of Management and author of The Fifth Discipline, The Dance of Change, Presence, and The Necessary Revolution

“Drawing on his capacious intelligence Daniel Goleman dissects the issues involved in the attainment of long term sustainability and details promising and intriguing solutions. Once again, he has written an essential book.”

-- Howard Gardner, author and Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education

“Our civilization faces a sobering, momentous challenge, one of the most profound in its history: the ominous possibility of ecological collapse, and Dan Goleman provides fresh insight and the most intelligent, thoughtful plan to confront it. Goleman skillfully weaves together his argument, through a masterful combination of logic and persuasion, about how we can apply our intelligence to this pressing question. Goleman makes a powerful and compelling case that how we answer this question will determine not just our fate, but the fate of our children and even life on this planet. This book should be required reading for every politician, policy maker, and citizen of this planet. It should sit on the desk of everyone who is concerned about making the best, most intelligent choices for our destiny.”

-- Michio Kaku, Professor of Theoretical Physics, author of Physics of the Impossible and Parallel Worlds

“The market place is a democratic voting booth, if we chose to make it so -- we the consumer get to decide which companies will succeed and which ones fail. Dan Goleman's  Ecological Intelligence provides tools for voting consciously and rationally. An eloquent "must read" bridge between business and consumer that crosses generational gaps and lights the path to an environmentally sustainable and socially just destination.”

-- John Perkins, bestselling author of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

Transforming the world from the inside out
By Mark D. Bello
It's the ultimate detective work: examining the processes (including energy, chemicals, social impacts) involved with creating, transporting, storing and ultimately consuming and disposing of "stuff." Author Goleman digs deep into "life cycle analysis" (LCA) of a wide range of products, looking at the environmental and social ramifications that are usually "out of sight, out of mind," guided by expert Gregory Norris. The insights are illuminating and go far beyond the usual (casual) carbon calculation. The process of recycling glass alone-- and the energy and chemistry involved-- is a real eye-opener, reminding us that reducing our impact to CO2 emissions vastly oversimplifies our footprint on the planet.

In my mind, this approach of telling stories and conducting forensic investigations into "stuff" should be embedded throughout education, because it is inherently interdisciplinary, combining math and science, but also social studies, history, psychology, business, sociology. It's also timely and would contribute to "eco-school" and 100% green school goals that are currently being developed.

For business people, this book is a must. While the "greening" of business is nothing new and is all too often manifest as "green-washing," there are signs that business is taking "cradle to grave" analysis of products and the supply chain seriously, in part because regulation of embedded greenhouse gases will require careful accounting, in part because of increased social responsibility, and in part because, when done correctly, it can save money, reduce waste, and provide a competitive advantage over the competition.

Goleman rightly points out that we can't consume our way of the dire situation we are in, but we can reduce our consumption and buy smartly. While a few individuals by choice or circumstances leave little environmental footprint, for most of it the challenge is to become significantly more aware of the impacts or the products and services we choose, thereby minimizing not only our carbon footprint, but our overall influence on the planet.

Both the book and the CD version (spoken by the author) are well reasoned, well presented investigations into "stuff" in all its shapes and sizes, providing fresh insights into the complexities and hard choices that must be made at all levels of society in order to turn the tide of waste and social/environmental degradation and foster the new energy economy with resilient, sustainable communities.

This book is not about ecology and it lacks intelligence
By Mark
I am appreciative of Goleman's idea of highlighting different branches or domains of intelligence, which is why I purchased this book. However, ecological intelligence is the wrong title for this book because neither of these subject areas are covered. I am a practicing ecologist and I am working on a second masters degree in ecoliteracy education. I am also the primary author for the Wikipedia ecology page. Hence, this book seemed like a good place to turn for my research. This book is about changing market decisions that are considered to be more 'ecologically' ethical in Goleman's mind, but the problem is that the connections between the market choices and their ecological impacts are not clear at all.

This book needs an introduction to ecology. For example, Goleman could have introduced some of the work by Howard Odum, a classical ecologist who ushered in a new era of understanding in the ecological sciences and wrote about the unification of ecology, economics and energy. Perhaps a historical account of the ecological sciences going back to Linnaeus or even Haeckel who first coined the word ecology. This would give some perspective on what ecology really means. Goleman needs to introduce and then build upon actual ecological literature to make the correct linkages. There was lots of opportunity to visit some of the ideas of natural capitalism and ecosystem services as they relate to critically to ecological intelligence. He mentions these, but so briefly that the reader cannot leave with an understanding of what these subjects are really about. There is no mention of the research in environmental education looking at the psychological or affectual relations between learning and ecological immersion, which would have been a good place to start.

This book is nothing more than a consumers guide to green shopping behavior. It is questionable if the green guides advocated by the author have any real ecological benefits because Goleman is clearly out of his area of expertise. Biodiversity is mentioned briefly on page 36 and 63, which is shocking given that ecology and biodiversity go hand in hand. On page 63, for example, he talks about biodiversity in life cycle assessment, one of the few places where he reaches a bit beyond the margins and into the realm of ecology, yet he makes a terrible mistake: "Loss of biodiversity refers to the degree of species extinction caused by a given process or substance." This is false. Biodiversity is more than species, it includes the functional side to ecosystems such as migration plus the nested hierarchy of life including genes, organisms, species and all the way up to the biosphere. Goleman briefly mentions a few key ecological concepts, but he does not explain them properly or by trying to make the text simple to read the deeper meaning of the concepts is lost in translation.

If I buy a book on ecology and intelligence, it needs to be intelligently written and I want to learn something about ecosystems. If the title of a book is about ecology and intelligence these two subject areas need to be clearly defined and addressed. This book fails on all of these accounts. This book presents a mainstream view on what ecology might mean. The unfortunate side to this is that Goleman is a popular author. Many people will read this book and will leave with little understanding of ecology, they will spread further myths about 'ecology' and what it means, and the same holds for the meaning of intelligence as it relates to this important topic. It is as though Goleman is thinking too narrowly about human ecology, but even if he is geared solely on the human dimension he misses the holistic side to the debate. This is surprising because ecology is a holistic scientific discipline, whereas Goleman reduces it down to consumer behavior and how this might change things on the periphery. I have no idea where he is going with this and it certainly isn't ecological. Goleman needs to read up on the ecological sciences if he is going to write about this subject. I hope that Goleman writes another version of this book, because he can do much better than this and needs to fix his mistakes.

Transparency
By Stephen T. Hopkins
I thought about viral marketing after I finished reading Daniel Goleman's latest book, Ecological Intelligence: How Knowing the Hidden Impacts of What We Buy Can Change Everything. In the same way that companies can use organized word of mouth campaigns to push products, consumers have an increasing number of ways to let their views be known and shared to influence products. Goleman proposes or anticipates the development of what he calls radical transparency by which all the contents and hidden costs of all products are visible to consumers. With that knowledge, sustainability becomes more likely, dangerous ingredients are eliminated, and we are more likely to have product choices that are green and safe. While I found Goleman's presentation to be pedantic at times, and preachy at others, the bulk of his book presents some clear thinking about one area in which consumers can take action: the decision of what to buy and what to avoid. Anyone making products will find Ecological Intelligence a useful book to read and compare organizational readiness for consumers that will be more activist in their expectations and actions.

Slow to start, but gets better!
By Shelly84
I bought this based on the rave reviews I read here on Amazon. And I have to admit, initially I was disappointed. The two main characters indulge in long, meandering internal conversations, a lot of which is completely irrelevant. Even when they're talking to somebody, each sentence in the conversation is interrupted with a lengthy thought process - honestly, they would be incredibly annoying to talk to! You'd say something and then have to wait in silence for five minutes while they analysed everything you said before replying. Adele even acknowledges this in the middle of a discussion.

"I still haven't answered Cole's question. I'm not sure how long it has been since he asked it, but probably a while, because he is looking at me strangely, like I have poo on my face or something. While I've been battling with myself in the comfort of my own head, I can only guess at what weird facial expressions I was making."

Adele has much-touted 'trust issues' which don't seem to stop her from immediately trusting the first two people she meets in the book. One day, she's a self-professed loner, then literally less than forty eight hours later she's part of a group who divulge their deepest secrets, risk their lives for each other and have a connection like they've been BFFs for years. It seems weird.

The two main characters are also a bit unbelievable and stereotypical. A poor, wronged heroine, stunningly beautiful of course despite her trauma, with mad fighting skills, risking life and limb to save her family. The handsome hero with tousled blonde hair, rich and coveted by women all over the planet, with daddy issues that make him want to get out and slum it with the 'normal' people. He even has a goofy sidekick.

Thankfully, things improve drastically when the action starts. There's plenty of action and intrigue to keep you moving through the story.

I bought the next book and will continue with the series. Part of my motivation was due to the 'mysterious secret' that suddenly appears at the end of the book as a rather obvious ploy to get you to buy the next book!

Amazingly written dystopian
By Night Owl Reads
Originally published in Night Owl Reads

I would like to thank David Estes for giving me a copy of this book. However, this fact does not affect my thoughts about this novel.

The Moon Dwellers was something I was excited for. And to make sure it's something I would like, I read the prelude of the story, which David shared in his blog, and the preview (first chapter) he offered in Smashwords. It didn't make sense at first, of course, but I got more excited because the first chapter was intriguing and the writing style is clean.

Two main things make up this novel, a brewing war and the romance. If you're not a big fan of insta-love, I suggest you put that dislike aside and give this book a try. It's unique and different in a way, it gives a new meaning to love-at-first-sight and leaves the romance time to develop. You'll see.

Like any other dystopian story, there is a bigger task at hand other than the romance and I like that the female protagonist's focus is on that task rather than just gushing over a guy, although there were parts that she does that, she still sets her feelings aside for the greater good.

Each chapter is written in alternating first-person POVs of Tristan and Adele. The whole story is one big adventure for both parties (Tristan and Roc; Adele, Tawni, and Cole). And each party gets caught in a situation that seems inescapable but would eventually get through it by sheer luck and coincidence. I was literally hanging on at the edge of my seat every time each party gets in danger.

I love all the main characters and their relationships! Tristan and Roc's friendship is one of my favorites. The bromance is overwhelming that I even made comments about them being the real couple in the story. The friendship between Adele and Tawni and Cole is also something, Adele only met the two but they stuck with each other till the end. As for Tristan and Adele, techncally there's no relationship yet, only an attraction that no one can explain.

One would say that there is a lot of coincidence in the story, that it's unrealistic, too planned. Don't forget that this is fiction and the author can do whatever he wants as long as it makes sense and comes out good. Plus, the coincidences that occurred in the story is something that we often see in movies or TV shows. Who's to say similar coincidences don't happen in real life?

A fabulous work of art appropriate for all ages
By Nicole M. Passante
Wow, what an amazing journey into a completely unique world. This Dystopian/Urban Fantasy Novel stole my breath. Journey under the earth's crust after post apocalypse into the tri-realms for an emotional adventure ready to sweep you into it.

Adele is a 17 year old girl sentenced to life in prison because her father dared to question their unfair existence. For six months she has held her own in the juvenile detention center while waiting for her 18th birthday only to be transferred to a maximum security prison. She is a moon dweller, in this dystopian novel a moon dweller is the middle class but don't let that fool you most of their neighborhoods are slums.

Tristan is a Sun dweller, Prince of the Tri-realms, first born son to the President. Sun dwellers have been taking advantage of the moon dwellers and even lower class Star dwellers for 500 years. However Tristan is unique and feels his father's tactics are unethical and disgusting.

One day while fulfilling his princely duty he is in a parade that passes Adele in the yard on the detention center, their eyes meet and Adele feels an instant connection to him. That had to be her imagination right?
Follow Adele and her band of rag tag friends in their mission to escape prison and rescue her father from the work camp he has been sent to. At the same time fate leads Tristan away from his Palace in his journey to escape his existence as the "Prince" of the realm.

Will they meet? Do they feel the same connection?

This was a fabulous work of art appropriate for all ages. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment of this sweet and fantastical world from the amazingly creative David Estes.

A quick bookend
By Captain Magster
Recently purchased the new reprint of Ben Bova's The Star Conquerors and enjoyed it for what it was, Bova's first major novel. The Star Watchmen is a later novel, by forty years, and it is fairly near the level of the first novel. Good plot, characterizations are a bit shallow, and the background history of the empire is only lightly touched upon. I like Bova's novels, have really enjoyed the Grand Tour series especially, so I was a bit disappointed with the shallowness of this novel. It mirrors tone and pace of Bova's first novel thus it makes a good bookend to forty years of generally good SF. I would ask the publisher/printer of these novels to please go back through the text and clean up the grammar. Some of it is quite atrocious and some is quite repetitive like the failure to put in apostrophes on possessive nouns/pronouns. The size was nice, not as small as the standard paperback but not as large as a standard SF soft cover book. For us older SF consumers, it was easy on the eyes and hands, with a larger font size and flexible enough so I didn't crack the book's spine like I usually do with paperbacks. I'm looking forward to Bova's next novels coming later this year and would enjoy another novel in the Star Watchmen universe that is as richly detailed in background and characterization as the Grand Tour series.

Fun, without being too heavy.
By Amazon Customer
Ben Bova is usually a safe bet when it comes to SciFi. His books are generally well considered and well written. What sets these ones apart is the Space Opera feel. You really need to have your tongue planted firmly in your cheek, but these are definitely a good read.

Some of the characterisation was a little shallow, but really it's an escapist novel. (Series of novels, really, if you count the others in the group) and manages to fill that role very nicely. I liked it.

Part of a bigger story.

I read this as a boy along with Star Conquerors. I loved both a the story. However, I will admit I was left wondering where the story went after Vorgens left Shinar. Well worth the time.

Review
Here's the thing that makes Boy Vs Girl such a stand-out: It's a coming of age story with a backdrop of faith that might be written for Muslim teens or might be written for me, a person of another faith who appreciates a good story. It works either way which is no small feat. The writing is clear and accessible even though it delves into complicated, but universal, issues. This means Robert's work will appeal to a braod age-range and demographic. therockpool.wordpress.com You can tell that the author has put so much of her heart into the novel and her characters. Their dialogue and language rings true, as does the way they act around eachother and towards their friends and family. This unexpected little book is a true gem and I hope it gets a wide audience. www.myfavouritebooks.blogspot.com Written in a light, non-patronising tone and using down-to-earth language, the twins' story, with their differences, similarities, problems and beliefs unfolds. The book is easy to follw with a snappy to-the-point plot, but makes many subtle points that hit home. Don't be fooled into thinking these are rose-tinted taoes about girls who can't match their headscarves to their henna; these books feature realistic characters dealing with issue relevant to youth - Muslim and non-Muslim - today. www.campusalam.org Gives an interesting insight into a culture that some readers might be quite unfamiliar with... And you probably won't see the ending coming... Armadillo Magazine This book confronts some challenging issues and offers a relevant read for anyone interested in the tensions which play themselves out within families and between cultures. School Librarian Very accessible for teens who want to understand more about Muslim culture, with a handy glossary of Asian and Arabic words and phrases at the back of the book. But the heart of the story s the unbreakable and close bond between brother and sister and how, despite their different journeys, they draw on their shared love and courage to do the right thing. Eastern Eye I found myself admiring and respecting the ambition of this novel, caught up in the characters and their journeys, caring how things turned out for them; and very much wanting to know what Muslim readers would make of it. Books for Keeps

Good book for Teens, but some mature content
By S. Espelien
I enjoyed reading this book, and I think it is very well written. Compared to other novels written for a Muslim audience, it far surpasses anything else. There is some content with drugs, and flirtations between the genders, but it is always clear what is right and wrong without it sounding like an after school special. I would recommend this, especially right before Ramadan as that is the setting of this book. Great conversation opener with your kids, too!

The Great Generation Gap
By Jill
I received this book from the publisher and Teen Book Scene in exchange for a fair and honest review. I am in no way receiving any compensation for my review of this book.

I am somewhat familiar with Ramadan and some Pakistani customs. I'm also familiar with the fact that Pakistanis living in countries other than Muslim countries are faced with two different worlds- the one their parents were raised in that they are expected to follow with arranged marriages, no dating, drinking, smoking, or any other kind of imbibing and no partying of any kind, even if you don't do any of those things. Then there is the real world. The one they face every day at school with their non-Muslim friends where they talk about what they did over the weekend and the boys or girls they are dating and other things that "good" Muslims don't do. Here are a few phrases that describe what it is like at least for Farhana, " ...you are their daughter, a Pakistani girl, a Muslim. You are expected to stay chaste, away from all this teen romance nonsense." (p.65) And "...parties were out of the question, staying over at friends' houses was unthinkable." (p.65) Then, "...how crazy was that? All around her, the messages were the complete opposite. The music, the videos, the movies, the teen magazines, were all full of the same thing: boys, boys, boys! It was like if you weren't hooking up with some guy or the other, you were on of the last living freaks." (p. 65-66). In reading Boy vs. Girl, it gave me a better appreciation for what a difficult world it is for anyone that doesn't follow the normal societal code.

Faraz is a sensitive, shy, good looking possibly effeminate boy. He isnt gay. He just isn't sports minded like his father. He's artistic. He's described as a "pretty boy" by the bullies and gang members in the book. In order to protect himself, he joins a gang, knowing it isn't right, but feeling like there isn't a way out. And truthfully looking at his situation, I wouldn't know how to get out of it either.
But as Ramadan approaches his aunt charges him to think about what he wants to get out of this Ramadan besides fasting. What does he want to accomplish. He has his own problems with his religion, never having been able to comprehend some of the language in the Qur'an. "What was the point of memorizing the Qur'an at madressah (Qur'anic school) if you couldn't even understand it at the end?" (p.78).

Farhana, his twin is brilliant and beautiful and has been secretly seeing a Muslim boy, Malik. But he broke her heart by seeing another girl and she hasn't been accepting his calls, but she still wants him. No matter how innocent it was, it is against what her mother and father would want for her and she thinks for Ramadan she will finally be over him. She also decides to wear the hajib the scarf over her hair and neck, not to display how devout she was, but "to make herself aware of God, her actions, being accountable, being a walking symbol of Islam." (p. 30) It had nothing to do with oppression.

I learned quite a bit about the wearing of the burqa -the full body covering and the niqab the veil that covers the face. The aunt that asked the twins about what they wanted from themselves during Ramadan, Aunt Najma, wore a jilbab- a loose flowing garment over regular clothes, a niqab, and even long black gloves. But she was educated at the university, went to mosque to pray and seemed to be active at least in helping homeless women. Of all the women Farhana and Faraz were around, she seemed to be the most liberated and of her own choosing, wore these garments as a show of commitment to her faith. She had no husband or man telling her she must wear them and in fact was almost shunned by her family for wearing them. As Farhana and her best friend discuss her aunt, Farhana laments that her grandmother "Naneeji's more interested in culture and what 'the community' will say"(p. 189) when her aunt wants to marry a non-Pakistani Muslim. Couldn't you just see your mother or grandmother saying something like that? I know mine has.

To say this novel was a fascinating look into the Pakistani culture would be a huge understatement. But that isn't all it is. It's a look at the generation gap between parents and their kids that occurs in many cultures. It's a look at the pressures kids face trying to live two different lives. And at the heart of it, it's a story about a brother and sister during the month of Ramadan who stray from their goals and find their way back in a somewhat drastic way to themselves.

I loved this novel. The writing style was so easy to read even with all the foreign words, there is a glossary in the back of the book. I read it easily in a few hours and was able to understand the religious aspects of the novel well enough to understand it's importance to the two main characters. The novel in no way is trying to convert you to Islam. Nor is it making a statement about Islam. It just happens to be a story that takes place during Ramadan, the holy month for Islam, and in an Islamic community. The story revolves around the brother and sister and what is happening with them. Both characters share the narration of the story and I got a real feeling for who they were as people. I understood their motivations even if I didn't agree with them.

I'd recommend this novel to anyone that wants to learn a little more about Muslim traditions. My previous misconceptions about the clothing were busted wide open in reading this novel. So were the mom and dad's. My 11yr old was reading over my shoulder for the last twenty pages and decided he'd like to read it and I'd say it's perfectly fine for the ten and up crowd. Read it. Maybe the more we know each other, the less scared we'll be to talk to each other.

Boy vs Girl is a GREAT read!
By Julie
Description:
Farhana swallowed and reached for the hijab. But then she saw with absolute clarity the weird looks from the other girls at school, and the smirks from the guys. Did she dare? And then there was Malik... What should she do about him? Faraz was thinking about Skrooz and the lads. Soon he would finally have the respect of the other kids at school. But at what price? He heard Skrooz's voice, sharp as a switchblade: "This thing is powerful, blud. But you have to earn it, see? Just a few more errands for me..." They're twins, born 6 minutes apart. Both are in turmooil and both have life-changing choices to make, against the peaceful backdrop of Ramadan. Do Farhana and Faraz have enough courage to do the right thing? And can they help each other - or will one of them draw the other towards catastrophe? This powerful novel explores the idea of honour and what it means to different generations of Muslim families.

Review:
This book was something I normally would have not picked up but I'm glad I was able to read it. I was moved by the Muslim customs in this book and it allows you to put yourself in their position, regardless of your religious upbringing.
What struck me is the Muslim culture suffers from so much racism; even bringing their children up in different countries they are still expected to follow the Pakistani way, even if the opposite sex is Muslim and white, black, brown or whatever. They are not and will not be a part of their families. I felt myself shuttering when the families absolutely refused to hear anything otherwise.
The story of the book covers from a male and female perspective; twin boy (Faraz) and girl (Farhana). He wants to be accepted at school but at what cost? He has fallen into the `gang' crowd. As much as he wants out, especially with Ramadan in full swing, he does not have the courage to stand up for himself and say no. He finds himself beating up guys with bats and selling drugs.
His sister is struggling with her identity as a Muslim. She wants to wear the hijab (headscarf) but her mother refuses to hear of it. If she defies her and wears it what will happen with her social status at school? She's been told she is supermodel beautiful but wearing the hijab will force the eyes of boys (and girls) to look the other way. Is this really what she wants?
As they are struggling to come into their own a horrible accident happens and threatens to take the life of one of the twins. Will the family pull together to overcome this or will they fall completely apart?
No matter what your religious background I highly recommend reading this book, especially to the YA crowd. Gangs, drugs, peer pressure is everywhere...

From Publishers Weekly
In this, his 10th volume on metaphysics, Penczak praises the traditional tools of magick (e.g., altars, candles and special ingredients), but devotes his energies to spells "accessible at any time, through meditation, visualization, words, and intent." Most of the book deals with clearly described procedures that are designed to effect change upon the spell caster more than on the outside world. After providing introductory techniques to alter consciousness, often through breathing, Penczak offers cross-cultural paradigms (the five elements, the web of life, chakras, astrology and the Tree of Life), encouraging readers to build a working familiarity with these tools for harnessing energy to create change. The 28 spells themselves range from the pedestrian (finding a good parking space) to the sublime (animal communication) as well as the ongoing and essential (perseverance). For each he provides corresponding colors, elements, chakras, planets, entities and the like. His clear instructions make this magick within reach of everyone, and his substantive appendix of corresponding systems (stones, animals, deities, etc.) is helpful. Chapters on healing are especially valuable. Penczak contends that in focused states of mind, clarified, applied thoughts are real things that shape us and our world. To this end, we should engage them with wisdom and precision. (Feb.)

As the title says - instant and uncomplicated magick advice
By Ria
While some of Penczak's books are very down to earth and uncomplicated to follow and thus a good book for a beginner or someone who does not want to get lost in magickal wording, this is not that type of book. You will need already some knowledge of the magickal world and vocabulary to direct you through the labyrinth of this book. But on the other side, this book teaches how to do magick instantly. It does not mean necessarily that you will see instant results. It means more that you can do magick and add magick to your daily life without the props or without many props. While Prenczak states what props do help, he teaches you that in the end it is about the intent and the energy you put into it. Some of the exercises will probably not be interesting for some people, some others will be for almost anyone around. To the first group would be one that opens a gate between the worlds, to the second group would be one that helps you find a parking space close to your home when you probably know that this borders on a miracle.

An Instant Classic
By RBSF
This is my first book written by Penczak, and I liked it so much that I went ahead and bought two more of his books by the time I had read up to the third chapter.

Anyone who reads books about magick knows that the market is flooded with authors that are all fluff and no substance. And then of course, there are those on the other extreme that write about magick in a manner that is utterly dry, condescending, and devoid of everything that makes magick worth learning in the first place.

Similar in style to Scott Cunningham, Penczak is one of those rare authors in the field that can take a potentially complicated subject and present it to the reader in a delightfully simple and practical manner, while clearly speaking from a wide breadth of knowledge and experience. He maintains a fast and friendly pace throughout each chapter that not only explains the concepts of Instant Magick but inspires you to START USING THEM INSTANTLY!

More than once I found myself torn between putting down the book to try out the next sample spell or meditation, or reading on to the next chapter.

Although more experienced practitioners are sure to find a lot of familiar material here, I doubt they'll find such a wide variety of it, contained in such an easily digestible package.

For newcomers, especially Wiccans, this book is simply a "must have." I certainly wish I it had been around when I started out!

So why only 4 stars? Well, I want to make clear that in my opinion, Penczak is a 5 Star Author. I just felt that he missed the mark slightly with this title.

Here's Why:

First and foremost, a fair amount of the book is actually a collection of meditations and breathing exercises that are probably best (or most easily) performed at home or at least with some level of privacy. In this sense, the title is perhaps a little misleading.

I wanted to see more examples of how Penczak himself performs Instant Magick in "real world" situations - while stuck on a crowded subway car or standing in shopping lines, etc. While he certainly provides the tools and the encouragement to do so yourself, I would have liked to hear more from his own day-to-day experiences in which spells are cast "instantly" while dealing with the hustle and bustle of the external world.

Which leads me to my next minor criticism, while he encourages the reader to find their own personal and spontaneous style of practice, the contents of the book are predominantly restricted to innovations on Wiccan traditions. This is of course great for Wiccans, but I would have liked to see a little more variety and creativity in his examples. I think some mention of Chaos Magick or perhaps a little advice on how one could employ popular culture as part of their spellwork (if the reader is so inclined) would have been appropriate here. For a book that is meant to present a new, adaptive approach to magick, it lacked some of the modern creativity I had hoped for.

Lastly, there was, in my opinion, an over-abundance of traditional magickal correspondence lists (astrological, herbal, stones, Deities, etc) throughout the book followed by a whole section of Correspondence Charts in the Appendix. Although he includes these lists with the intention of giving the reader a variety of options to pick and choose from, in my opinion, these lists may potentially divert the reader from far more vast resources - their own imagination and creativity.

For most experienced practitioners, these lists are already well-known territory. For beginners, they are probably better learned elsewhere, more throughly, and prior to employing them with the techniques of "Instant Magick."

I personally felt these last pages would have been much better spent discussing in more detail the potential of using one's imagination to forge new paths in the realm of magickal practice rather than picking and choosing from already well-traveled routes.

If I sound excessively critical, it's only because this book is in fact so well written, that for me, the few imperfections it has were all the more noticeable.

But all criticism aside, this book is just too good to pass up. Don't miss it!

Solid intro for the beginner
By Trish Deneen
In Instant Magick, Christopher Penczak gets to the bare bones of magical practice. He gives you techniques that don't require fancy tools or regalia. His writing is clear and friendly and gets to the point quickly. He gives you the three basic ingredients of magic - altering consciousness, focusing will, and directing energy and exercises to develop the skills needed for each step.

Basically, the word "instant" in the title is a bit of a misnomer. It is referring to the fact that the only tool that you need to perform magic is your mind. You will still have to put out the mental energy to do it, and the author gives you a solid foundation to start from.

It has a heavy Wiccan (i.e. continual mention of the Rede) and new age flavor. However, Mr. Penczak presents five different paradigms from which to practice magic. In this way, he encourages the reader to make their own way steering clear of dogma if they so choose. He includes visualizations to introduce you to each paradigm and relate to its energy.

The advanced practitioner may find very little of use here. This is definitely a practical magic book for the beginner. He encourages starting out small and building confidence in magical ability and gives the reader the tools to do that. There are appendices with short lists of correspondences, which are not comprehensive, but they do provide a starting point for your spells.

He clearly states that this system is not meant to replace more elaborate techniques. The focus is to teach the aspiring magician the energy behind spellcraft. He also demonstrates that you don't have to break the bank buying spell ingredients to do successful magic.

Evil awakens. One man stumbles into its headlights. From the author of "Tex Murphy and the Pandora Directive" and "Tex Murphy and the Tesla Effect" comes a new, expanded and updated edition of the first exciting adventure in the series. It’s December 2042 and Tex Murphy, the last of the old-style PIs, has hit rock bottom. A run of tough luck forced him to relocate to the seedy side of town, then his wife ran off with the guy Tex hired to reupholster his furniture. Now he’s left with no money, no prospects and no dignity…just some nicely-reupholstered office chairs and one last bottle of cheap bourbon. When Tex is hired out of the blue by a rich dowager, it seems too good to be true. A priceless statuette has been stolen from her. Getting paid to recover it may be just what Tex needs to get back on his feet. And it does…until the rug gets pulled out from under him. Tex’s search for the missing statuette leads him through the shadowy back streets of post-apocalyptic San Francisco and into a labyrinth of deceit, manipulation and murder. Who, or what, is the ‘Moon Child’? Is there any truth to the rumors that an ancient evil, foretold by prophecy and worshiped by a centuries-old blood cult, has mysteriously reawakened? And can Tex stay sober long enough to pick up the pieces and put them together to solve the most dangerous puzzle of his life? The world needs a hero to stand against the forces of evil. Unfortunately, it will have to make do with Tex Murphy. And he’ll need all his P.I. instincts and every ounce of Murphy savoir faire to stop the ominous prophecies before they become a terrifying reality…and rob him of his next unemployment check.

Adds Huge Amounts of Detail to the Meaty Parts of the Classic Story
By Lake K
I looked into buying this book several years ago. I learned that it was out of print. It was technically possible to buy one, buy they were rare. And selling for a LOT of money.

That said, it's an unexpected privilege to be writing a review of the second edition. If you're reading this, there's a decent chance that you're aware that it shares a story with a popular interactive movie released several years ago. The novel's take is much more serious than that version. The tone is much darker, which works well. If you're expecting a generic retelling of the movie version, this will contain some surprises. For one, huge chunks of the earliest segments are simply not here. The book starts up just as that story begins to get serious (which took a while, if you think back). It's a choice that will startle long-time fans, but it works well. The tone here is often dark, and generally substantial. It makes for a solid read, and it adds enormous amounts of detail to the story's most dramatic sequences. More than enough to make up for the whimsical sequences near the beginning that some fans might be alarmed to notice are missing.

Immensely entertaining read, couldn't wait to get back to it!
By sirk j
I'm not usually one to take the time to write a review but after reading Under a killing moon, I had to take a minute to share so somebody else might discover this gem. Its kind of like telling everybody about a great meal you had at a restaurant except you aren't concerned that it might be the regular chefs day off when they go. Killing moon is a highly entertaining read with enough twists to keep you glued to every page. Tex is written in a way that satisfies the gustatory and intellectual in one fell swoop as he puzzles-out clues over a smorgasbord of delectable dishes whose descriptions sound as if they could be from the authors first hand accounts. To his credit, Conners writes what he knows. My favorite parts are the hilarious one liners that get Tex anything from a polite laugh to a sound beating, regardless, he couldn't.... not say it! Killing moon makes you feel like its ok if the crazies are in charge, as long as a guy like Tex is around he'll fix it. While I was sad to be done with the book, I realized I had two more to read in the series!!!

Perfectly Marries Detective Noir and Science-Fiction
By Deraphim
I didn't necessarily have the highest expectations when I started Under a Killing Moon. I'd played the computer game before... quite recently, so I assumed I knew what to expect. I learned pretty quickly not to underestimate this book just because I thought I already knew the story.
Wisely, the story chose to deviate and just plain cut out the sillier elements from the game. (There's no mention of fetching chocolate cake for chocoholic hobos for instance) Instead, the author tells the essentially the same overarching story from the games (with the same Tex Murphy) in a very serious manner that reminded me a lot of Raymond Chandler's writing (someone who's books I originally started reading thanks in part to Tex Murphy)

Basically, if you haven't played the games (and even if you have), it's a well written old fashioned detective story with a unique setting and memorable protagonist that will make you chuckle and keep you engaged.

I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.
