Dark and twisted love story

This is a fast paced story with decently developed characters. I loved the friendship that exists between Navia and Chloe, their relationship was clearly set up and easy to connect with. Jason was an enigma. Just when I thought I had his character pegged, he switched up and there was another layer that I didn't expect. When the story got dark, I kept thinking that, well, that's not so bad, and then it got darker. Their relationship development I could also see progressing but oddly, it didn't make me feel better about it. I continued reading and felt that I knew people who went down that same path but I just needed to see where they were going with it. Although the relationship and the story are steamy, the twists they take are surprising and unsettling. I enjoyed reading this one although I don't normally read dark stories. It is well written and the story line will hook you through to the end. I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Good dark story

Navia’s Watson lack of confidence and shyness was affecting her life. Could not find a regular job and her sex life was almost nil. When her best friend asked Navia to cover her job for a week and earn a much needed money, she accepted. She was going to be the secretary of the billionaire businessman Jason Black for a week. She had been told that Mr. Black was a bit different, overly private and intense so, she had to stay out of his way and everything would be fine. But quickly she found that with Mr. Dark and Mysterious nothing would be fine in her life again. I had read some dark and hot romances before and I find that this story met my expectations. The characters were struggling with the dark side and the emotions that psychologically were dragging them. The author presented the awful circumstances with details that shakes the reader and provoke feelings of displeasure because this is a dark story. The suspense, the wicked hot sex and the erratic behavior of the protagonist adds to the darkness of the story. The outcome of the relationship was not good or bad but rather what the protagonists could deal with. In the light of this I think that the characters were good, with a strong chemistry and a bit dose of co-dependency. Somehow, Jason helped Navia to overcome her lack of confidence and she was able to choose what her inner self really wanted. Enjoyed and liked the story. Kept me interested until the end. Another author that I’m going to keep a close eye on.

Trapped but see the Light-wonderful dark romance read

This is a dark romance story told about two people who meet and they are never the same.
Navia is struggling to find a job after college. She works temp jobs, trying to get a permanent job but so far no luck. Her friend Chloe knows of a job she can work that will help her out since right now money is very tight—the job is Chloe job-she needs Navia to work in her place for a week until she gets back from her wedding and honeymoon. Navia finally agrees because she really needs the job. While at Chloe’s wedding, she meets this delish man and she feels this immediate pull toward him that is so heavy and very sexual. But before anything could go further he is gone.
Monday morning on the new temp job, Navia goes into work and who does she see, the delish man from the wedding and he is her boss. His name is Jason Black and he is very HAWT! But there is something about him that is dangerous and still. Navia was told to be quiet and keep out of Mr. Black’s way but somewhere along the line things just happen that didn’t keep her out of his way and things are not the same again. He is so dominant, dark and very alpha to Navia’s light, submissive nature.
The sex between the MC is OMG awesome and the reasons why Jason is the way he is will give you pause. I also felt so bad for Navia because she fell in love with Jason against everything going against them. There were several scenes that made me hope she would give up and move on but really Mr. Black holds her heart. The story ends on a HFN ending and I would have loved a more HEA note. The story leaves it open for more from this couple and I hope the author does write a follow up on this couple because there is such chemistry between them and the POV written in Navia’s view was wonderful.

The Best at Translating Conceptual Shifts

Brett Moulding, Dr. Rodger Bybee, and Nicole Paulson have made a significant contribution to the literature on the necessary shifts required to achieve the new vision for science education. The first several chapters of their book provide an overview of the trajectory of research that lead to the publication of A Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards. Their book emphasizes an important goal of science education is to create a classroom environment where students make sense of novel phenomena that engage them in science performances at the intersection of three dimensional learning. The authors assert that a highly effective way to think about how three dimensional learning is implemented in a classroom is with a performance sequence of: gathering, reasoning, and communicating. Reflection questions at the end of each chapter and the appendices make this book a valuable resource for individual study or work among a PLC. This book is the best I have read at translating the conceptual shifts of the Framework and NGSS into a logical, straightforward manner so as a professional teacher you can implement these powerful ideas successfully in your classroom.

Musical Musings: A Hodge-Podge

Byrne begins his wide-ranging historical, technological, psychological and sociological examination of music with a novel insight: architecture of musical venues shape composition and instrumental arrangements. Regarding huge gothic cathedrals, intimate nightclubs, and jungle camp sites, room reverberation, volume of space, and audience vocal ambience dictate modal versus scale works, instrument development, and performance dynamics. The great revolutionary divide was recording technology, and musicians discovered that what works live does not necesarily achieve the same result on vinyl, tape, CD, or .mp3, and vice versa. Expectations often lead to disappointment and the performance and performer suffers. With such an interesting introduction, the book offers much promise. It almost fulfills expectations with both personal and general tidbits and theses that reward the reader, though for myself his personal examples are somewhat weaker.

The second chapter is an musical autobiographical section describing the evolution of his music and stage attire over the succeeding eras of rock. In his world travels, his encounter with Japanese and Balinese traditional music and theatre art had a profound influence on the development of his stage craft. One of his suits clearly had classic Japanese origins.

Chapters 3 and 4 return to musicology with an expansion of the role of technology, recording and playback. The historical account is amusing when considering the delusions of reality instilled by each new device on the unconditioned and uneducated ear. The ideal of recordings was and remains an actual live performance, particularly among classical music fans; but the alternative worthy philosophy is the electronic creation of uniquely shaped sound itself, as with tape editing, synthesizers and digital programming, and electric instrument design. Oddly, computerized editing of recordings to achieve perfection in tempo, pitch, and so forth proved imperfect to the ear and lacking in warmth and positive emotional value. Byrne does not elaborate in later chapters, but recordings (and its transmission over radio) changed society by uniting peoples, speeding musical development, and (for instance, in Brazil) of overturning governmental policy of approved musical forms. I do not share Bryne's lament about the calculus-like wave sectioning of digital CDs over analogue LPs because of psychoacoutics, an aging ear, and the fact that speakers are yet analogue in their cone movement and shaping. Chapter 7 is all about the business and financial side of the music industry. There are pie charts. He explains the very recent changes in industry, when musicians can edit and mix their music on their laptop computers and distribute it via digital download and cloud companies and promote themselves with YouTube videos and have kickstarter campaigns to get public underwriters. The giant brick & mortar record shops (Tower, Borders, Virgin Megastore) are no more and the power of music labels are severely diminished. This chapter should be read by anyone considering how to create and promote their own music; he describes various business models.

The next chapter furthers practical advice on the choice of venues, song material, the courage to be different, responsibility to band members and fellow musicians, and so on. It is a peculiar chapter for such a book.

Chapter 9 pulls back to a shotgun approach critical of musical elitism and lauding the amateur musician. In the days before mass-marketed recordings, there was a piano in the parlor. Even in the 1960s, every kid (yours truly included) had an acoustic guitar, singing folk songs. Until very recently, courses in music appreciation were dedicated only to classical music and rarely jazz. Governmental and corporate funding erected costly symphony halls and museums. Byrne seems to ignore the reality that these measures were to preserve and encourage endangered music styles and that the masses are doing fine in supporting pop and avant-garde culture, filling stadiums and arenas and small local music joints. Symphony halls are not restricted to dead European composers; I have heard contemporary American, Japanese, Argentinian, Iranian, and other world composers. Still, the point is taken when middle and high schools do not offer music and art classes and other nations support amateur musicians, music clubs, and youth bands and orchestras. Music and art should not be passive art forms.

The final chapter covers music as a human, biological, and indeed metaphysical essence. This historical and anthropological section sketches prehistorical, ancient, and early modern musical instruments, musical sciences, and philosophies. Everything vibrates, from atoms to planets. He does not include it, but string theory of matter involves vibrating strands of energy. Bryne briefly mentions the differing scales of music across the planet, the relationship of language and speech to music, neurological imprinting of music and its performance, music in religious rituals [Taliban and similar zealots aside], the natural ambient music appreciated by John Cage and the composed ambient music of Satie, Eno, and Feldman, and various other aspects of music. Bryne can only touch upon these large subjects as he closes the book. While it may lead to further reading, I find the section too scattered to be truly effective.

This grand book, with its padded cover, offers a little of everything to everyone. Fans of Bryne, as leader of the Talking Heads or as musicologist, will surely find much to appreciate here. I do think, however, that he could have prepared two smaller books, one dedicated to the practice of musicmaking today and one to music's historical and anthropological aspects.

Terrific book for music lovers and content creators alike

This is David Byrne week for me. On Sunday, I caught the sensational David Byrne and St. Vincent show at the Orpheum Theater in Boston. The last time I saw Byrne live was when I caught the Talking Heads on August 19, 1983 at the old Forrest Hills Tennis Stadium in New York City. So, clearly I was already a Byrne fan.

How Music Works

The other part of David Byrne week is his fabulous new book How Music Works. The book is Byrne's take on the industry he's succeeded in. He offers keen observations about the music industry, the art of making music, telling stories in the book using a combination of history, anthropology, and music theory. I love this book!

In particular, Byrne has a fascinating take on the development of music, which is quite different from what other music historians say. In a chapter titled "Creation in Reverse" he argues that music evolves to fill the space where it is performed.

For example, the Talking Heads evolved in the 1970s at New York punk club CBGB requiring volume to overcome the din. The sparse music that came out of the CBGB scene such as the Ramones and Television worked perfectly for that room.

Music that evolved in gothic cathedrals (lots of reverberation) has long notes with no key changes. Carnegie Hall and other similar rooms require texture. With discos, people made music to exploit the fantastic sound systems and people's need to dance. Rock music played in hockey arenas (the worst acoustics on the planet) must be straightforward with medium tempos. You get the idea. The music that is successful works perfectly for each venue.

With personal sound systems (starting with the Walkman in the 1970s then evolving into MP3 players such as the iPod), all of a sudden you can hear every single detail. This allowed pop music to evolve from its early radio form.

Byrne has a 2010 TED Talk on this idea: "How architecture helped music evolve."

How Content Works

As I devoured How Music Works I was constantly thinking how Byrne's ideas apply to other forms of content. I think the ideas are valid when thinking about the written word, video content, and the Web. I used the ideas in How Music Works to formulate ideas about content in general.

About the Author
Robert Meikyo Rosenbaum, PhD, has been a Zen practitioner for forty years and received lay entrustment from Sojun Mel Weitsman of Berkeley Zen Center. Bob is also authorized as a senior teacher of the Taoist practice of Dayan (Wild Goose) qigong in the lineage of Yang Meijun by Master Hui Liu and teaches at the Wen Wu School and the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. For thirty years he practiced Zen and qigong while raising a family, trekking the mountains of the High Sierras and the Great Himalaya Trail, and working as a neuropsychologist, psychotherapist, and specialist in behavioral medicine and chronic pain for Kaiser Permanente. Bob is the author of Zen and the Heart of Psychotherapy. He has also been a Fulbright Professor at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in India and director of the doctoral training program at the California Institute of Integral Studies.

Sojun Mel Weitsman is a Zen teacher in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki and a former abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center. He lives in San Francisco.

Breathtaking - Moving - Brilliant

I first read the Tao Te Ching when I was about 16. That was a long time ago. I always have several translations available to me. Walking the Way is, in part, a new translation of this sublime classic. But at its heart, it is a revelatory commentary. Each chapter (or verse) has its own commentary, as well as a short reflection taken from the author's personal life. I stumbled on this version with its personal commentary while browsing in an unnamed bookstore. Please know that I have not yet finished this book. It is so utterly outstanding, so eloquent and so staggeringly insightful, that I want to savor every page ... even every paragraph. I am an author of a book and I am struck by some of the amazing parallels between this book and my own explorations into the nature of life and the cosmos. If you love philosophy, if you want to see what you are in this mysterious fabric of existence, then do yourself and your world a favor and get this book. You will be extremely grateful you did.

Very good commentary especially for tai chi players

I play tai chi and do qigong and am interested in the Tao since it permeates both. I've read several translations of the Tao Te Ching and gotten something out of most of them but sometimes it is helpful to me to have a well-thought-out commentary to get my brain going and to leave the sometimes archaic wording of the work and move toward something that connects a little more closely with my western, daily life.

I think this book helps me quite a bit with that. The author has a nice conversational and heart-open style that speaks to me and I like the structure of the book where he first presents the text, then opens with a general, "every man" comment and then adds some insights from his personal life. Read slowly without rushing, these three angles flesh out the Tao nicely and stimulate me to start creating some personal, inner commentary of my own. He is also a long-time qigong teacher and some of his comments reflect that practice and connect my practice little more with the Tao text.

How skillfully this book bring our encounters with the little melodramas of daily life along side the "ancient" wisdom of the Taoist and Zen sages, and demonstrates the inspiration and cosmic meaning lurking beneath the surface of our everyday situations. Illustrating this fundamental reality in such practical terms brings us all useful tools to free ourselves from both the pettiest of tyrants and the most heavenly saviors.

A definitive text

The fields of relativity and hydrodynamics are vast in their own right, and even their intersection constitutes a broad, multidisciplinary area. As a result, most texts on the subject have often focused primarily on 1-2 aspects, skimming over the other parts. This voluminous tome by Rezzolla & Zanotti provides a comprehensive treatment that is simultaneously classical (in the sense of following older monographs) and contemporary (up-to-date on the latest techniques).

It opens with a brief review of GR, which is somewhat utilitarian, but gets across all the points clearly, and develops the tools necessary in all the subsequent sections. Chapter 2 is one of the (many) gems in the book as it provides a lucid and self-contained description of kinetic theory, which underlies the theory of fluids. Particularly noteworthy is the extended discussion of the importance of the equation of state, and the many variants employed in the literature. Chapter 3 enters the core areas of the book - namely relativistic perfect fluids, and the section on irrotational fluids and the conservation laws is particularly noteworthy. Chapter 4 on waves is most welcome as not many texts treat this topic in detail and the discussion of shocks and the Riemann problem is well done. Chapter 5 on detonations is somewhat brief, and a more detailed (albeit Newtonian) treatment exists in the marvellous book by Zel'dovich and Raizer. Another unorthodox and timely topic presented is Chapter 6 that deals with non-perfect fluids, and the sections on causality and thermodynamics are highly commendable.

Part II of the book is really where the monograph sets itself apart from its predecessors. Chapter 7 opens with a neat account of the Einstein-Euler equations, and the discussion on the ADM formalism is well judged. Chapters 8 and 9 concern themselves with a detailed treatment of the numerical methods employed and distinguish clearly between the finite-difference and HRSC methods. In the latter, the discussion of Riemann solvers deserves a particular mention for its combination of brevity and insight. Chapter 10 moves on to higher-order methods, but the discontinuous Galerkin scheme could have been explained in slightly higher detail.

Part III is likely to be of the greatest interest, and importance, to astrophysicists as the applications of the theoretical and numerical methods are presented here. In Chapter 11, a host of topics ranging from blast waves, accretion (spherical and axisymmetric), tori and jets are compactly presented. The book concludes with Chapter 12, with a fine discussion of self-gravitating fluids - the dynamics of binaries is particularly well done. There are also a host of appendices that provide extra mathematical and numerical background, and Appendix C, with a summary of the commonly used tensors, will prove to be particularly useful.

On the whole, "Relativistic Hydrodynamics" is an excellent book that should satisfy all three groups - the theoreticians, the numerical relativists and the astrophysicists - as it offers a nice blend of the three. Instead of consulting older monographs on the subject, or current (but incomplete) review papers on the subject, this book represents a unified source from which instructors and/or researchers can pick and choose their content. The only critique, and a minor one, that can be offered is that Part III could be slightly expanded, as it contains practical applications, and is therefore of high relevance.

Fundamental book about Relativistic Hydrodynamics

This is a fundamental book, the ultimate reference for those who want to learn relativistic hydrodinamics. The books starts with a very thorough review of General Relativity (GR), it is not intended as a textbook for GR, but the review is well done and complete. Afterwards the authors deal with the many physical processes where both GR and hydrodynamics play a role. The theory is complete, very well explained, mathematically rigorous but not heavy nor boring. I myself was probably expecting more pages on computer codes currently used nowadays for numerical simulations of complicated astrophysical processes, but this is the only minor shortcoming of this book. Excellent work, which is about to become the reference book for the next 20 years, a must for all those researchers who work in this area and for everyone interested in learning the subject.

An indispensable guide to Relativistic Hydrodynamics

My personal background is in numerical high-resolution shock-capturing (HRSC) methods in a Newtonian framework. Hence I was interested in the book as a means to help me extend this work to a relativistic setting. In this goal, the book succeeds perfectly.

At the beginning there is a useful and thorough review of General Relativity (GR) but I would assume that any potential reader would have a theoretical physics undergraduate or early graduate introduction to GR prior to picking up the book.

Chapters 2 and 3 concentrate on the underlying kinetic theory of fluids and then extend this to the relativistic regime. For someone with a primarily Newtonian background these chapters were indispensable on "seeing how the relativity fits in". In particular, there is an extended discussion on the various equations of state employed in relativistic hydrodynamics.

I was mostly interested in the second section, which is concerned with numerical methods for relativistic hydrodynamics. Chapter 7 describes how one carries out a "foliation" or "3+1" decomposition of space-time using the ADM formulation, which allows spatial and temporal discretisation of the equations.

Chapters 8-10 then discuss the various computational approaches employed in numerical relativity. Finite Difference Methods are treated first, including discussions on stability analysis and various schemes (Lax-Friedrichs, Lax-Wendroff).

I was particularly impressed by the section on HRSC methods in Chapter 9. Having studied this area in-depth, I found the treatment approachable and sufficiently detailed for a non-specialist to get up to speed. If one wants to go further then one can always look at Toro[1].

Chapter 10 discusses higher order methods such as ENO/WENO and ADER. I've only briefly considered these methods before so this chapter was particularly useful to get a good handle on the area.

The final section of the book concerns applications. There are a wide variety of physical simulations discussed in this section broadly under the banners of non-selfgravitating and self-gravitating fluids. I found that I wanted slightly more detail on some of the simulations so I went to the original papers in certain cases. However, there is plenty of variety in this section and it highlights just how vast the area of relativistic hydrodynamics is.

The book is applicable to a wide range of individuals with varying backgrounds. It contains sufficient diversity for those interested in the theoretical, numerical or practical applications of the methods. Importantly, there is always enough material in the chapters (each of which covers an extremely broad research area in its own right) for an individual to get up to speed with the current literature, and plenty of references are listed in order to continue further research.

While Appendix E presents some of the key aspects of a HRSC code, it would have been nice to see a fully-functional relativistic listing. I appreciate that there are space constraints in a work such as this (as well as associated installation issues that inevitably sideline the discussion), so it is not a huge problem.

I'm quite certain this will become the key text for new students entering the field at graduate level and will remain that way for some time.
